‘Original factory Supermonos fetch £75,000’ This mint 1990s Ducati Supermono racing single is set to star, along with not one but three classic Vincent V-twins, at an auction at the National Motorcycle Museum (NMM) in Solihull at end of July. Although not built by Ducati itself (just 67 original examples were made at the Bologna factory between 1993 and 1995), it’s been assmbled by Supermono specialist Alistair Wager from rare ‘new old stock’ parts and is believed by him to be the last accurate continuation/replica Supermono able to be made. Original, factory Supermonos now sell for in excess of £75,000, with this ‘new’ version is expected to go for a relative bargain £64,000-£68,000 when it’s offered for sale at the H&H Classics auction on July 20. Convincing traditional bikers of the merits of electric bikes can be a challenge. But when that biker is a 90-year-old ex-factory test rider who hasn’t ridden in over a decade, it might seem an impossible task. But that’s exactly what happened when up-and-coming British electric bike brand Maeving invited retired former 1950s Francis-Barnett test rider Colin Dean to sample their first machine, the RM1. Maeving are a new British brand founded by university friends Seb Inglis-Jones and Will Stirrup. Unlike many new electric lightweights, which are often Chinese-designed and built, the Maeving is a British designed and built machine, albeit using some proprietary parts such as the Bosch hub-mounted motor. Aprilia RS660 Colour TFT, with optional connectivity. It’s clear and concise, controlling the riding modes and electronic interventions and remaining legible in all light conditions. Swaps from white to black backing once the sun goes down. Yamaha R7 Colour LCD designed to look similar to recent R1s. It’s easy to read and operate, but the engine temperature at the base of the screen is obscured by cabling. Not as glitzy as the RS660, but that’s to be expected at almost £2000 less. For me, proper biking adventure always involves a ferry. The excitement starts when I’m sitting at the port gobbing-off with my biker buddies, drinking a weak-yet-overpriced coffee and chewing through a stale croissant whilst waiting to board. Inspired by their small single-cylinder models of the Sixties and Seventies, Ducati’s retro-flavoured Scrambler line-up was an instant hit when it thudded into showrooms in 2015. They’ve offered various versions of the 800 since to try to maintain the bike’s momentum, of which this Scrambler Urban Motard is the latest. There’s also a range of 1100cc models too, for those wanting a bit more meat with their potatoes. Based on the familiar platform of trellis frame and air-cooled V-twin engine, the £10,746 (on-the-road) Urban Scrambler features a smaller front wheel and crisper geometry for a sportier attitude and, according to Ducati, ‘a fun, energetic and explicit bike which rides through the urban jungle’. Peter Hickman will make a World Superbike Championship appearance at Donington Park later this month. The British Superbike rider has made two previous wildcard appearances: one with Worx Suzuki in 2012 and one with the factory BMW squad in 2019. It often feels like our lives are dominated by the pursuit of excess – and that gluttony has inevitably spilled into motorcycling with the same ease that it’s pervaded everything else. Two volunteer Blood Bikers have ridden all round the nation in a biking marathon to raise money for charity and attempt to set a new Guinness World Record. Thomas Carroll, 52, and Mark Robinson, 58, both from Aberdeenshire are members of the Highlands and Islands Blood Bikers (HAIBB). This MV Agusta Superveloce Ago limited edition raised £52,900 in aid of the UNICEF Ukraine emergency fund when it was auctioned at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed. Signed by 15-times world champion Giacomo Agostini and briefly ridden at event, the machine is number one in the 311-strong production run – which commemorates the number of race Agostini won over 17 years. “We’re delighted to honour one of the legends of motorsport while helping to raise funds for a most worthy cause, ” commented Tim Schofield of Bonhams. Unless you’re immersed in the world of trials the name Vertigo might not be a familiar one. Represented in the UK by Dougie Lampkin, who has taken their machines to five wins in the Scottish Six Days Trial since 2015, the company have long had an eye on expanding into road bikes. The Challenging Roads Tour starts very cleverly with some nice, flowing open roads which gave us all the chance to figure out what the buttons did on our new toys. However, it didn’t take long for the black hard stuff to turn dirty. The trails were quite easy at first, albeit with a very loose top-surface which gave you a few cheeky moments, but gradually kindergarten turned A-level with winding mountain passes involving tight hairpins and rocky descents. I personally witnessed a few people come very close to taking the quick way down the mountain, which would have been less than ideal, and as the trails got trickier and the riders worked a bit harder it wasn’t long before someone broke Rule #1... Road, off-road and adventure rider who loves getting away touring It’s hard to describe the feeling of deflation when you hit the starter button on your bike, and it fails to… well… start. There I was, panniers loaded, helmet on, ready to set off to Dorset to meet my family, but the three-month-old Multistrada V2S had other ideas. My attention immediately turned to the battery. Arecent poll conducted by our insurance partners at MCN Compare has revealed one in five motorcyclists claim to have had an accident or sustained damage to their bike as a result of hitting a pothole. Just over 1000 people were questioned, with 79% of those answering also agreeing there were a lot of potholes in their area. “Local authorities are under significant financial strain and central funding from Government is allocated on an annual basis, ” Head of Roads Policy at the RAC, Nick Lyes, told MCN. “This, in effect, means councils struggle to schedule in routine maintenance and resurfacing works which then leads to a quicker and cheaper ‘patch and dash’ approach.” The most recent Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) report for 2022 conducted by the Asphalt Industry…

Ducati have released fresh technical details of their 2023 MotoE racer, which looks set to provide the development data for plug-in production bikes of the future. Dubbed the V21L, the finished bike will be the sole machine used in the 2023 MotoE World Cup, with an 18-strong fleet lining up on the grid at a number of MotoGP rounds. BSA have announced a new UK and Ireland distributor, alongside a new visitor experience. The historic brand was bought by Indian automotive giant Mahindra in 2016 and BSA unveiled their first all-new bike, the Gold Star, last December. Now, in what the firm call ‘another step toward bringing the new BSA Gold Star back to the streets’ Lukas Distribution have been appointed to help build a new dealer network from a new 100,000sqft HQ near Coventry. Michelin first shook up the sports-touring tyre market with their game-changing Pilot Road 3 in 2011. With their distinctive tread pattern and use of sipes, the PR3s looked – and performed – more like a pair of racing wets than anything we’d seen before.
