New data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shows the percentage dropped from 18.3 percent in 1999 to 11.4 percent in 2018. Adults with high total cholesterol are at increased risk for heart disease and stroke, among other health problems. As part of its Healthy People 2020 initiative, the CDC set a goal of reducing the prevalence of high cholesterol to less than 13.5 percent — and that’s apparently being achieved.
