THE NSW DPI Game Fish Tagging program is the largest saltwater tagging program in the world. Having been in operation since 1973, the program has now seen more than half a million fish tagged by recreational anglers. A huge thank you to all the anglers, skippers and clubs who have contributed to this 500k milestone! The program continues to provide valuable scientific information on the movement and growth of billfish, tuna, sharks as well as other sportfish like yellowtail kingfish and dolphinfish (mahi mahi). The program encourages fishers to help improve the knowledge and understanding of the fishery by providing tag and recapture data, which can then be utilized by scientists to look at fish migrations and improve knowledge of fish stock structures. FISHING hooks have seen some extensive developments over the years. What started out as a fairly simple bent piece of wood or bone centuries ago, has transformed into engineering works of art in the past few decades. I can remember live baiting from the rocks in the late ‘70s and using Suicide 6/0 or 8/0 hooks for yakkas or slimey mackerel. The old Mustad Suicide was a damn good hook back then; mainly because there was bugger all around to compete with it. With a bit of filing it ended up being a sharp, solid and cheap hook that accounted for many a tuna and kingfish. On any given day, my favourite wall, the Moruya Breakwall on the NSW far south coast, arguably plays host to just as many non-anglers as it does keen fishers.
