Willys Wars and former Street Eliminator racer, Gerry Treit, passed away on 23 December. Before getting the racing bug, Gerry was an enthusiastic hot rodder in the Fife area of Scotland with a wicked sense of humour. Both characteristics were highly evident as his racing became more serious, and we featured the World Products 605ci Mopar-powered ’40 Willys coupe he built himself, along with the Tartan Drag’in Race Team, in the July and September issues in 2011. Long term CC readers will immediately have recognised this car from the unusual tail lights, but it’s had a whole lot more than a repaint and a set of wheels since we featured it in our December 2002 issue. Back then, Kev Elliott raved about Jason’s car, not least the fact he did a load of the welding on it and painted it the first time round, some 12 years or so before the feature came out. Numerous well known southern rodders were involved along the way, and to that list can now be added the crew at Andy Robinson Race Cars, who undertook the unenviable task of taking a 20th century show car and revamping it for the 21st century. Super Comp racer, Andy Williams, passed away on 27 December. Having undergone a kidney transplant at the age of 16, Andy went on to race his ’32 roadster, Eight Mis ‘B’ Haven, and was later strapped into the Wild Child dragster. Known for his sense of humour, Andy enjoyed racing to the max and competed in Vandal in Denmark, Drachten and Hockenheim, creating some fantastic memories for those who accompanied him on his journeys. Wow, talk about the only certainty of it all being the uncertainty. I am writing this the day after Boris Johnson announced the latest lockdown measures. Initially, it sounded like this latest regime might last until mid-February, but then this morning I heard it could be the end of February. Now, certain members of the government are talking of it running into March… Yup, uncertainty indeed, and what it will mean for this year’s show and race season remains to be seen. Morewheels of time Dear CC, in response to Kevin F Welch’s letter in the January issue, I’m pretty sure one of the guys he used to work with is Pete Stokes. I worked with Pete from the mid-’80s until ’91 at a company called Auto Image based in Shirley, and then Acocks Green in Birmingham. We specialised in the custom wheels, seats and body kits available at the time. We also supplied smoked headlamp covers and Turbo Light spray for the rears. Remember those? Pete used to work out of the Warwick HQ of JBW and clearly remembered Moulin Rouge and a large yank wagon they used for deliveries called the Wheel Mobile. Following the last instalment, the T was sent to the trimmers for the hood covering. Now, patience is a virtue I am told, but I’m not a patient sort of guy, and no good at waiting whilst others get on with a job. Hence, the weeks of waiting for the car to emerge from the trimmer’s workshop were not easy for me. Comp Eliminator racer, Nev ‘the rev’ Mottershead, passed away on 31 December. Nev raced a Toyota Supra before progressing to the small block Chevy-powered ’69 Vauxhall Ventora we featured in the April ’12 issue. The Ventora was being upgraded to 7.50 spec for the 2020 season before circumstances dictated it wasn’t to be. A kind and gentle man, who was ever cheerful and always ready to help, Nev will be missed by all in the scene. Our condolences go to Nev’s wife, Libby, and all his family and friends.
