Luxury German brand MCM, which celebrates its 45th birthday this year, has adopted a more-is-more mantra of late when it comes to its designs. Architect Omar Gandhi was looking for a way to consolidate home and office life when he came upon an overgrown, narrow lot in the North End of Halifax, Nova Scotia. BMW’s two-wheeled Motorrad division has a new e-drive star – the CE 04. With its quiet, amply-ranged electric drive, futuristic design and innovative connectivity capabilities, the CE 04 brings a fresh and future-facing perspective to the modern, ever-evolving urban mobility landscape. Forming part of BMW’s silent revolution, the CE 04 is quick around town. With a maximum output of 31kW (42hp), it has a powerful motor that gives outstanding riding pleasure. Rather than precious diamonds and gold, jewellery designer Maria Sole Ferragamo’s materials of choice are leather offcuts and metal shavings. Drawing on her architecture degree from the Politecnico di Milano, and master’s in jewellery from Central Saint Martins, the founder of So-Le Studio produces pieces with sharply defined forms that resist traditional silhouettes: earrings curl around the whorl of the ear or graze the shoulder, while oversized necklaces drape over the body like garments. Ferragamo moved her brand from London to Milan in 2020, and produces her pieces in Florence. One of the most sublime synergies in an outfit is when different aesthetics collide: the casual and the rarefied, the utilitarian and the ostentatious, the attention seeking and the understated. One such styling trick is swathing denim, so synonymous with daytime style, with extravagant embellishments, such as diamonds, rhinestones or crystals. This season, we saw Miu Miu drip distressed denim jeans with sparkling stones, while Louis Vuitton paired a ballooning denim skirt with a gleaming armour-like vest. As hygiene has come to play such an important part in all our lives in recent months, so too have young designers looked to create innovative and aesthetically pleasing ways to keep clean. In an attempt to reduce the amount of waste generated by the mini bottles of shower gel and shampoo found in hotels, Manon Novelli created the Ephemeral collection, consisting of a selection of soaps, for hands, body and hair. Whether it’s installing a giant conveyor belt of ‘skin’ encrusted with anatomical detritus or memorialising a Crossrail digger lost in the line of duty, Holly Hendry has a flair for animating the inanimate, dissecting history and science, and delving deep under the skin of her subjects. The British artist – who has a similar way with words as she does with sculpture – takes sickly sweet to a new intensity in describing her mother’s banoffee pie recipe: ‘I like that it is a textural masterpiece that takes you through all the layers of imagined production and consumption – whipped, smashed, squashed, chopped, chewed, savoured, swallowed, digested – all before you’ve got it in your gob.
