Demonstrations have been held around the world in support of anti-government protests taking place in Iran, which have been going on for more than two weeks.
What’s happening in Iran?
The protests started on 28 December in Tehran, the capital city of Iran. To begin with, shopkeepers in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar (a large, covered marketplace) closed their shops and started demonstrating. After that, the protests spread to other areas of the country, although it’s not clear how many people have been taking part. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the protests have reached 574 locations in Iran. HRANA has also reported that more than 2,000 people have died in the protests, and at least 18,000 people have been arrested.
