On 1 June, Poland elected a new president, Karol Nawrocki. It was a close result between Nawrocki and his opponent Rafal Trzaskowski, but in the end Nawrocki narrowly won with 50.9% of the vote. What happened? There were two rounds of voting for the presidential election. Trzaskowski (who is the mayor of Warsaw, Poland’s capital city) was just ahead in the first round in May. Experts predicted the final result would be extremely close and that Trzaskowski would win. More than 20 million Polish people voted and both candidates claimed to have won before the result was announced. Rosemary Sandberg, who died recently aged 85, worked in the books business. She was responsible for publishing lots of much-loved children’s books, including The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr, Dogger by Shirley Hughes and the Horrid Henry books by Francesca Simon. Sandberg began her career working for Puffin books, the children’s book department of Penguin books. She helped to set up the Puffin Club for young readers. Members were called Puffineers and received the Puffin Post magazine, with news about books and authors. After moving to another company, Sandberg started Picture Lions paperback picture books. Works published there included the Mog books by Judith Kerr and stories by Quentin Blake and Maurice Sendak. Sandberg believed in a “balanced diet” of books for young people, including ones that…

Scientists have found that snapdragon plants can “greet” bees by producing more nectar (a sugary substance eaten by insects) when they are nearby. Pollination is how most plants reproduce, and lots of them rely on insects that fly between flowers transferring pollen. For the study, researchers recorded the buzzing noises that different insect species made when they beat their wings. They played the sounds to snapdragons, a type of flowering plant, to see how they would react. In response to the buzz of the snail-shell bee, which is a very good snapdragon pollinator, the plant produced more nectar. Not only did it produce more, but the nectar was more sugary too. On 25 May, the world’s first robot kickboxing tournament took place in Hangzhou, China. The humanoid (human-like) robots competed against each other in teams and in one-on-one contests. The skills of the competitors, which were controlled by humans, werefar from perfect and some of the robots lost their balance after certain moves. On 28 May, Namibia marked its first Genocide Remembrance Day. Genocide is the deliberate attempt to destroy a group or race of people. Between 1904 and 1908, an estimated 65,000 Herero people and 10,000 Nama people were killed by German forces. Germany ruled Namibia, which was then known as South West Africa, between 1884 and 1919. The Herero and Nama communities were targeted after trying to stop German people taking their land and cattle. On Genocide Remembrance Day, the Namibian president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah joined community leaders in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, for a candle-lighting ceremony in memory of the genocide victims. On 2 June, the UK Government published the Strategic Defence Review, suggesting ways to protect the UK in future. It was written by a group of defence experts and the Government has said it will carry out many of the review’s recommendations. What is the aim of the review? Its aim is to make the UK better equipped to protect itself, although it is not a plan for war. One of its goals is to make the UK’s armed forces stronger. The review says there should be a small rise in troop numbers in the British Army – and it should always have at least 100,000 soldiers. The famous 19th century playwright Oscar Wilde once said, “Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.” Yet today, some companies make thousands of new designs – not every six months, but every day. On 24 May, the Government announced new rules for zoos in England, Scotland and Wales aimed at improving conditions for animals. The rules are listed in a document called the Standards of Modern Zoo Practice for Great Britain, which was first published in 2012. This currently only covers England and Scotland, but the Government has now updated the document and the new version will cover Wales too. The new standards include measures to improve animal safety. Elephants will have to be kept in larger enclosures that are more like their habitats in the wild. The tethering of birds of prey will gradually be stopped, with some exceptions. In Venezuela, South America, hundreds of Orinoco crocodiles are being released in an effort to prevent their extinction. The animals, which are critically endangered, have been bred in captivity for a year. Jupiter is the oldest and biggest planet in our solar system. If Earth were the size of a grape, Jupiter would be about as big as a basketball. Now, a study has revealed that after the Sun and planets formed from a cloud of gas and dust called the solar nebula, Jupiter was twice as big as it is now. Scientists have discovered that around 4.5 billion years ago Jupiter had a radius (the distance from the centre to the outside edge) more than twice as long as it is today. Have you heard of roller derby? With two roller skating teams and lots of action, it is exciting to play and watch. A team representing Great Britain is preparing for the Junior Roller Derby Association World Cup, which will take place in July in Australia. The sport takes place on an oval track. Each team has five players, from a squad of up to 15, all wearing four-wheeled skates and moving anti-clockwise. Four players are blockers and one is a jammer. The jammer’s job is to get past the other team’s blockers and they earn a point for each blocker they pass. Blockers try to stop the jammer. NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. It was set up in 1949 and now has 32 member countries, including the UK. Its purpose is to guarantee the security of each member. An important rule of NATO is “collective defence”. This means that if one member of NATO is attacked, all the members will help defend them. From 26 to 31 May, Europe’s biggest youth festival, the Urdd Eisteddfod, took place in Margam Park near Port Talbot, in South Wales. Organised every year by Urdd Gobaith Cymru, a national youth organisation in Wales, the Welsh-language festival brings together young people aged from eight to 25 years old, and their families. It was a book that Nizar Ibrahim read aged five that first left him “blown away” by dinosaurs. He went on to study them at university, doing a degree in biology and geology and then a PhD (the highest level of study) in palaeontology and anatomy. Now he’s a palaeontologist – a scientist who studies fossils (imprints of ancient creatures preserved in stone). Britain’s smallest owl species, the little owl, was introduced to the UK in the 19th century. They are now found in woodland, farmland and even in parks and gardens across England and parts of Wales. Unlike other British owls, these can often be seen in the daytime, although you’re most likely to see them when they hunt at dawn and dusk. Adults are just 20 centimetres tall, with mottled brown and cream feathers, a short tail and bright yellow eyes. Flowering plants appeared on Earth at least 123 million years ago, scientists say – which is even earlier than first thought. Working out when flowers first appeared has puzzled scientists for hundreds of years. Even Charles Darwin, the famous naturalist who published a book called On the Origin of Species in 1859, called it “an abominable mystery”. To unlock the problem, scientists studied ancient grains of pollen (the substance that causes plants to form seeds) from Portugal. They are so small, they’re not visible to the human eye. Google Street View is part of the Google Maps website and app that lets you see photos of real-world locations to help find your way around.
