On 16 March, Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium in London, beating Liverpool 2-1. The win is Newcastle’s first English trophy since 1955, when they won the FA Cup.
Newcastle’s goals were scored by defender Dan Burn and striker Alexander Isak. In the 95th minute of the game, Liverpool scored but it was too late to claw back a victory.
Tens of thousands of Newcastle fans, who are known as the Toon Army, celebrated at Wembley Stadium and at Newcastle’s home stadium, St James’s Park. One fan, Gordon Rayner, who travelled to Wembley for the game, told BBC Radio Newcastle, “I was born just after they last won anything… I’ve waited my whole life for this. It’s going to take a long time to sink in.”
