It all started with a small scallop shell with a hole pierced through the middle. This 30,000-year-old object sparked something in author and scientist Alice Roberts’s imagination. Who owned the shell? Why did they add colour to it? Was it a necklace?
In her work as a biological anthropologist (studying humans in the past), Roberts uses ancient human remains to learn about history. The shell, which was found in a cave in Spain, inspired her to write her first novel for children, Wolf Road. The novel is set in the Upper Paleolithic period of prehistory, when humans started making paintings, sculptures and tools.
