THE ANTICIPATION OF a good night’s sleep at the end of long and tiring day is almost as sweet as drifting off. Cocooned in snug bedding, curled around a hot water bottle, your head resting on a downy pillow or two, you are about to enjoy one of life’s simple, free pleasures. Which makes it all the more exasperating when you don’t get enough sleep, kept awake by insomnia, long working hours, or simply staying up too late.
The right amount of sleep (about seven hours for adults) helps recharge the brain, repair cells and release important hormones. Lack of sleep, on the other hand, as well as making you very tired, can lead to a risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, poor performance, a foggy memory and general disgruntlement.
