DISTRIBUTION: Widespread across most of the northern hemisphere, its range extends as far south as Mexico, the Hawaiian islands, Morocco, India, Japan and South Korea. Also present in south-west and eastern Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and elsewhere as a result of introductions. Inhabits environments ranging from Arctic tundra to subtropical regions.
UKDISTRIBUTION: Encountered in any part of the UK, wherever there is a suitable wetland habitat.
IUCN RED LIST STATUS: Least Concern, numbers stable.
HABITAT: Both fresh and saltwater wetlands, which may include small ponds and lakes, streams and rivers, estuaries and open sea. Frequently found in parks and other urban environments, sometimes well away from obvious water sources.
