The Other Half of You
Michael Mohammed Ahmed (HACHETTE AUSTRALIA)
It’s a strange thing to read the dialect of your hometown in something as formal as a novel. Patron saint of ‘the area’, Michael Mohammed Ahmad, speaks of lowies, Wogs, Nike Air Max’s with an emboldening specificity. As a writer, I only hope that like Ahmad, I can observe the right things and find the courage to lay them down. In this final instalment to his semi-autobiographical trilogy, Bani Adam, although heartbroken, has come of age. No longer is he concerned with pushing up against outsiders, in this story it’s his family who prove unyielding. These pages aren’t for the beige, and if they sing to you, you will have Ahmad on repeat forever.
