Jelena Telecki doesn’t intentionally draw from the past, however fragments of it inevitably find their way into her work. A painter who left her homeland during a period of substantial unrest, she draws broadly on themes of power, representation and human interaction. Telecki’s paintings and sculptures are raw, intuitive, uncensored – like the artist herself. Telecki left her homeland during the Yugoslav wars, a series of conflicts for independence fought in the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001. She’s previously expressed a sense of having been trapped there, leading to an ongoing interest in social theory and power dynamics. This is where she developed an interest in art history, and her immersion in the industry began.
