At the hilly Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon, held in the Santa Ynez Valley since 2007, the overall winners earn magnums of wine after conquering 764 feet of climbing. Despite all the inclines, a fast finish is possible, thanks to a 4.5-mile downhill stretch beginning at mile seven. On the way down, participants pass orchards, vineyards, lavender farms, and ranches, including 2,700-acre Sycamore Valley Ranch (better known as the late Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch). On the next page, see why runners love this rural ramble.
