Here’s where I’ve landed: On first encountering a runner, a friendly acknowledgment (wave, nod, “Hi,” etc.) is in order. On the second pass, the proper response is a fleeting glance and tight smile. A self-conscious “Hi again! Ha ha!” is permitted at this point, but not mandatory.
