Right from Cardiacs’ inception at the end of the 70s, listeners who inadvertently stumbled across their music could feel as if a wonderful, precious secret was being revealed. Operating in the margins of punk, prog and psychedelia, Cardiacs forged an absurdly unique path, both musically and aesthetically; their song shapes were obtuse, their melodic and harmonic approach extraordinary, their appearance grotesque. Anyone with an appreciation of British eccentricity would have been drawn into their orbit, and over a series of singles, EPs, cassettes and explosive live performances, their fanbase grew.
