An incredible discovery has been made in Australia, changing our knowledge of life on earth. As a result of this find, the origin of amniotes — the group comprising reptiles, birds and mammals — has been shown to be up to 40 million years earlier than previously thought. This is thanks to a likely lizard that scampered across an area of ground some 350 million years ago, leaving a trail of small footprints which subsequently became fossilised.
The fossil itself was discovered by two local amateur palaeontologists, Craig Eury and John Eason, in the Mansfield district of northern Victoria in Australia.
