IN FEBRUARY 2019, a year before travel lockdowns, I was travelling with friends in Colombia, searching for rare or even unknown aquarium fish, and here I found a fish hunter's treat. Of the several different biotopes here, one of the nicest I fished in was Río Humadea, southeast of the city of Villavicencio: It was a stony and fast-flowing river with particularly clear water. At the time I visited, I recorded a pH of 5.5, 0°GH, 2°KH and a temperature of 27°C. The river's banks were populated with ibises and overgrown with jungle trees, from which small monkeys watched proceedings with curious glances. We snorkelled and fished there for three days, fascinated by the abundance of fish that populate this biotope. This is a worthwhile destination to visit.
