DEROSH Sewraj will be remembered by his family for his work ethic. The 28-year-old businessman died last week after being struck by a light pole on Brighton Road in the Bluff, near the Wentworth Hotel. Sewraj was a director for Choice Cars, which he established in 2020, and the Atlantis Conference Centre. He was also a board member of Wentworth Hotel and the Sewraj Group of companies. His brother, Dilvir Sewraj, said his sibling had ordered bricks to expand the Choice Cars building. THE eThekwini Municipality began a rabies vaccination drive on Tuesday to encourage the public to vaccinate their pets. The initiative is in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Msawakhe Mayisela, eThekwini spokesperson, said it comes after several people were infected with rabies. He said the vaccinations were free. “Pet owners must bring their animal’s certificate from any previous vaccinations. DURING the Inanda Riots in 1985, Anand Reuben Murray was allegedly stabbed to death by a group of men armed with spears and assegais. Murray, 39, who owned a business manufacturing furniture, was then allegedly set alight. Except for his face, he had burn wounds all over his body. Police tracked down his wife Rajanee Devi Reuben Murray thanks to a utility receipt that they found in his pocket. She then took on the responsibility of raising their three children who, at the time, were 11, 9 and 5 years old. AVENDARAN “Avi” Appalsamy, a part-time administrator, was killed last Monday while walking to his front door. It is alleged that a friend had dropped Appalsamy off in Longcroft, Phoenix, outside his home and driven off. Two men then exited a vehicle, believed to be a Mercedes-Benz, and fired at the 38-year-old. His bag and cellphone were stolen, and the suspects fled. DOCTORS in South Africa have it rough. Places for medical students at universities are hotly contested and artificially restricted. And once students make it in, they have to study for a minimum of six years, then serve two years as an intern. In any normal job, this would be enough. But after these eight-plus years, they are expected to do an additional year working for the state as a part of mandatory community service. This community service sees them become pawns of a woefully under-equipped and incompetent national health department and often just becomes another stumbling block contributing towards alleviating our shortage of much-needed doctors. IT CAN’T be that we, ratepayers, who contribute towards the salaries of municipal officials and especially Durban Solid Waste (DSW) employees, be held ransom to their demands. This while our community is waist high in uncollected refuse bags. It is obvious that management has failed to discipline its employees, and they are taking advantage of the situation. To find a solution, the DSW management must be removed and a capable management with proper skills, including HR and labour law experience, be employed. This must be done by following the correct HR recruitment process, not cadre deployment. THE proposed Unlawful Entry on Premises Bill is open for public comment until September 16. The proposed bill was recently drafted by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJCD). The current Trespassing Act dates back to 1959. It prohibits the entry or presence on private land and the entry or presence in private buildings. Those found guilty pay a fine or could face imprisonment. In a statement, Minister Ronald Lamola said the current act was outdated. “It is a piece of colonial legislation and is not fit for purpose. It was passed even before South Africa was a republic, when South Africa was still a union. Sominthra Sewgolum, the wife of late golfer Sewsunker “Papwa” Sewgolum, died last Tuesday. She was 94. Sewgolum was born in Mariannhill in November 1928. She married Papwa in 1950 and then lived with her son, Rajen, in Verulam. JERMAINE Tyson Sethialall has handed himself over to the police. Sethialall, 28, from Brookdale in Phoenix, was arrested in December last year and charged with fraud. He allegedly swopped a stolen bakkie for a vehicle and is being investigated for selling another bakkie and giving the buyer a fake logbook. Sethialall has pending cases in the Durban, Verulam and Port Shepstone magistrate’s courts. In May and August this year, he failed to appear in the Durban and Port Shepstone magistrate’s courts. In recent months, the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals have been a topic of robust discussion for communities, scholarly research and even within the educational environment and policymaking. SEPTEMBER 5 was the 50th anniversary of the Munich Massacre as the presidents of Israel and Germany embraced significant ceremonies of remembrance. History will tell us that the Munich Massacre was an attack during the Summer Olympics in Munich, then West Germany. A DURBAN businessman has been hailed a hero by his family after he sacrificed his life to save his daughter. Mahomed Aboobaker, 47, of North Beach, drowned on Sunday afternoon after saving his 16-year-old daughter, Zayura.
