I want to commend you for highlighting the options our government has in mitigating against the drastic and shocking fuel hikes in recent times. The increases began last year, before the Russian/Ukrainian crisis, and it is a fact that crude oil prices and the value of the rand against the dollar are volatile. POST REPORTER INDIAN President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Padma Shri award on 125-year-old Swami Sivananda on Monday for his contribution to yoga. The event was held at a Civil Investiture Ceremony-I at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Born in Pattamadai in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, Swami Sivananda has authored 296 books on yoga, Vedanta and a variety of subjects, according to an Indo-Asian News Service report. His books emphasise the practical application of yoga philosophy over theoretical knowledge. POST REPORTER ATHIMULAM Nadasen, a stalwart in the promotion of the Tamil language and culture, and a trustee and life treasurer at the Merebank Tamil School Society (MTSS) for several decades, died on Sunday. He was 99 years old. Nadasen was the eldest son of the late Sanasy Thuruvengadum Nadasen Odayar, who arrived in South Africa from India in 1902. Odayar, who had a love for Tamil, started classes for the language in Merebank in 1933. He was one of the founders of the MTSS in 1936. Odayar later donated land for the building of a Tamil school in Merebank, which was also used for English education. Later, when the school was forced to relocate, land was acquired in Burdwan Road. Shuayba Mahomed I WAS raised in a conservative home where religion was strongly enforced. I always dressed modestly. However, I was never forced by my parents to wear the hijab (head covering) at all times. When I reached my 20s, I made a personal decision to wear the hijab at all times. The personal desire, which made me change my mind, was to help me try to understand my identity, my role and my place in society. I like to be respected for what I believe. SINCE apartheid ended, there has been a lot of issues that South Africa has experienced. People of colour, particularly black people, were brutalised, dehumanised and discriminated against. They had inferior education, health care, municipal services and so on. They could also not go into what was known as “white areas”, get certain jobs, stay in hotels and eat in restaurants because of their skin colour. Why is there now so much crime, corruption, racism, unemployment and a breakdown in moral values? It is because of the legacy of apartheid. Nothing has changed since South Africa became a democracy. The matter which started on February 28, was set down until Friday, March 25. That’s because for the past two weeks a trial within a trial has been held, with the defence objecting to the prosecution using statements made by the accused at the time of their arrest. THIS month marks a year since the passing of King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, who died in hospital after complications related to Covid-19. King Zwelithini was on the throne for 50 years and was a great proponent of social cohesion. He shared a special bond with the Indian community in South Africa and adopted Ishwar Ramlutchman, a South African of Indian origin, as a prince of the AmaZulu Kingdom. Ramlutchman was given the name Prince Mabheka Zulu which means “one who looks after my people”.
