THE painful revelations at the Dr Hoosen Mia Haffejee inquest serve as a grim reminder that those who took part in his torture were sadistic. Our freedom was a long struggle. It claimed countless lives, including that of Haffejee. We honour the sacrifices he made. The claim that he committed suicide was a predetermined plan of deception. However, when we sift through the disinformation and misinformation and look at the facts, we have no reason to believe the official information released at that time. Last Thursday, Parliament’s portfolio committee on justice and correctional services called on stakeholders and interested persons to submit written submissions on its Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill. Kambadasen Subramoney Govender of Merebank, a member of the Natal Indian Congress and Umkhonto we Sizwe, testified last week at the reopened inquest into Haffejee’s death in detention in August 1977. Haffejee, a 26-year-old dentist, died about 20 hours after being abducted and taken to the Brighton Beach police station by SB members. The SB officers said Haffejee had hanged himself with his trousers from a grille door. But his family, unconvinced, have been searching for the truth for 44 years. WE SAY that children are our future yet we seeing children in our communities dying from Covid-19 infections. We hear the myths surrounding the vaccine which creates an infodemic. To date, there is no cure for the virus, no medication and no home remedy besides a vaccine that can save lives. Vaccine hesitancy is common in our communities. I have asked many and the responses include, “I will wait until there is a better vaccine” or “The vaccines are poisonous”. AN ARMED conflict in Kashmir has thwarted all attempts to solve it for three-quarters of a century. Kashmir, a 140 000km² valley between the snowcapped Himalaya and Karakoram mountain ranges, is a contested region between India, Pakistan and China. LIVERPOOL have extended captain Jordan Henderson’s contract, the Premier League side said on Tuesday, putting an end to speculation over his future at the Merseyside club. DEAR Fellow South Africans, Over the course of the three years since the Commission of Inquiry into state capture started its work, we have heard of the lengths to which the perpetrators of corrupt acts have gone to conceal their misdeeds. It has been a complex undertaking to unravel the networks of influence that enabled corruption. Among other things, vast webs of front companies were established to move funds around and disguise payments made to politically-connected individuals. The same patterns have been seen in a number of investigations into corruption being undertaken by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the NPA’s Investigating Directorate and others. THE quarterly labour force survey of the official unemployment statistics for KwaZulu-Natal show that joblessness in our province increased by 2%, from 30.5% in the first quarter of the year to 32.5% during the second quarter. The figures, which reflect conditions between April and June, also show an expanded unemployment rate of increase of 0.7% to a staggering 47.1 %. What this means is that almost half of our province’s citizens are either without work or have given up looking for jobs. Tragically, it is our youth who are most affected. Not even the province’s supposed economic hub, eThekwini metro, has escaped the jobs bloodbath, with a 28% increase in unemployment – 84 000 people – quarter-on-quarter. FOLLOWING the Taliban’s rapid taking of power in what it describes as a re-established Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, fears of a certain kind of Islamist ideology being brought back have led a large number of Afghans to flee, or fear for their lives. The Taliban were known for their oppressive rule. They ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, at which point they were pushed out of power by US and British troops. Under the Taliban rule, religious minorities and other Muslims who did not share their fundamentalist understanding of Islam were not tolerated. They are charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and public violence.
