Iwish, when I was younger, I had had a better appreciation for getting enough sleep. However, I was one of those eager young businesswomen who was trying to climb up the corporate ladder and, in so doing, worked excessively long hours while trying to balance being a mother and wife. I discarded – numerous times – the one and probably most important aspect of my health routine: a good night’s sleep. And when I was particularly disobedient, it showed. The FDA recently opened for public comment its longawaited guidance for industry about reducing salt in processed food products. The guidance affects about 150 products. It gives baseline data for those products and sets targets for salt reduction. Please note that I am using the word salt, not sodium. The targets are for sodium reduction. Most dietary sodium comes from salt added to processed foods and pre-prepared foods. Salt is 40% sodium. The target dietary intake of 2 300mg sodium comes to just under 6g of salt a day, which is not particularly low. It is, however, lower than current intake levels. The sleep cycle: You may think sleep is a long-continued state of unconsciousness. Rather, it is a made up of several stages, a cycle that is split into rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM). Most people’s sleep cycles consist of a period of NREM sleep followed by a very short period of REM sleep, which is generally when dreams occur.
