“Preserving the post-Federation features, including decorative timberwork and leadlight windows, was central to the renovation of this inner-west Sydney home, so when designing the kitchen I was mindful of the need to blend old with new. The choice of classic, Shaker-style cabinetry, decorative light fittings and the tiled splashback were all sympathetic to the post-Federation period, but the island bench with engineered stone top, integrated Miele appliances and European hardware provide all the functionality and convenience of a modern kitchen. “This kitchen is the result of careful planning and an extensive renovation of a 1930s home. We relocated the kitchen to the rear of the house, where it now sits within a larger space with convenient access to both indoor and outdoor living areas. Traditional Shaker-style doors and drawers are combined with stainless-steel handles that have a semi-industrial look inspired by new stainless-steel appliances. Wandering through this beachfront home, it’s easy to see why this look has so many admirers. This home on Sydney’s northern beaches opens directly to the beach, so the brief was to create a classic Hamptons-style kitchen that would blend seamlessly with the rest of the house, encapsulating the enviable views. We needed to create a beautiful, timeless space that would lend itself to the breezy seaside setting. “From our first meeting, it was clear these clients were not looking for a kitchen just to prepare and cook meals, but also a place where they could spend time with their family and friends. The kitchen’s old footprint needed to remain the same in the new design, as some of the existing features had to be taken into consideration. The wall to the rear of the servery is curved, so to tie the spaces together, the island benchtop and servery top both have curved edges. The sandstone used on the internal and external walls matches the mantel, floor and overall palette. An intriguing touch is the horizontal lines of the upper and lower cabinets encapsulating the window, and another outstanding feature is the island benchtop. “The existing kitchen had many design problems, which made it awkward and unsatisfying for the owners. Originally, where the fridge is now, there was a pantry and next to it was the old fridge. However, the owners couldn’t access either properly. Instead of having this awkward corner, we squared it off and made it far more useable. Other appliances were also placed in difficult positions, such as the cooktop, which was in the corner, and we moved these to ideal spots. “The client’s love of entertaining was the focus for this kitchen renovation. The external wall was extended so the space could accommodate an impressive 4.8m x 1.2m island bench. At that size, and with a 70mm benchtop, it was important to avoid it looking too solid. This was achieved by having an open cavity and an overhang with room for stools along the front, around one end and on part of the back. The wine fridge adds another element.
