Classic racing motorcycles and sidecars that have been a staple part of Historic Winton will not feature on the programme in 2025. Changes to safety standards, dictated by motorcycle insurers, have led to all motorcycle and sidecar events being dropped for the 48th edition of the all-historic race meeting at Winton Motor Raceway in regional Victoria. Conducted jointly by the Austin 7 Club Inc. of Victoria and the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria (HMRAV), Historic Winton was first held in 1977, with motorcycles from veteran (Period 1) through to Forgotten Era (Period 5) and sidecars on the programme from the beginning. Yamaha Racing Team (YRT) have confirmed their rider lineup for this year’s mi-bike motorcycle insurance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul. The experienced, multiple championship-winning Mike Jones returns, while 20-year-old Max Stauffer is the new arrival, coming across from Penrite Racing Yamaha to replace Cru Halliday in the factory team. YRT believe this combination of youth and experience will help them go one better in the championship in 2025. Jones finished runner-up in last year’s ASBK Championship behind Josh Waters (McMartin Racing Ducati) and Stauffer was fourth, while Halliday finished eighth after missing the last two rounds with injury. In 2024, sales of new motorcycles in Australia fell for the third consecutive year, according to data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). The silver lining is that the decline in sales was less dramatic than in 2023 and the market for off-road bikes actually improved. Overall, 94,224 new motorcycles, scooters and OHVs were sold by FCAI member brands in Australia in 2024, which is a fall of 1.8 per cent compared to 2023’s total of 95,980. The year-on-year decline is less than from 2022 to 2023, when sales fell by 3.1 per cent and far less than the 19.8 per cent ‘Post-COVID’ drop from 2021 to 2022. Australia’s Daniel Sanders triumphed at this year’s Dakar Rally, achieving a personal goal and also providing much-needed good news for KTM. In his fifth Dakar start and first with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, the 30-year-old Victorian led from start to finish in the 7,700+km marathon. Having won the 2024 Rallye du Maroc in his first full event after joining the factory KTM squad, Sanders came to Saudi Arabia for the 47th Dakar feeling healthy and confident. His team mates were two-time winner Kevin Benavides and his brother Luciano Benavides. After setting an all-time record in 2023 with 209,757 sales, BMW Motorrad broke that record in 2024, selling 210,408 motorcycles worldwide. While all models in BMW Motorrad’s portfolio contributed to the best result in their 102-year history, the standouts were once again the GS models, led by the R 1300 GS and R 1250 GS. Europe was BMW’s strongest region in 2024, with 118,727 sales, of which the “home market” of Germany accounted for 26,117 units - an improvement of 8 per cent on 2023. France was the next best European market, with 20,693 sales, while 11,411 sales in Central Europe last year was a 12 per cent increase on 2023’s result. After three years on a Ducati in the FIM Supersport World Championship, Oli Bayliss will be on a Triumph in 2025. The son of three-time World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss, Oli replaces Ondrej Vostatek at PTR Triumph Factory Racing this season. The 21-year-old Aussie will share the PTR garage with 2021 World Supersport300 Championship runner-up, Tom Booth-Amos, who joined the British team last year. Although he hasn’t raced a Triumph before, Bayliss enters the 2025 World Supersport season with some familiarity of the Street Triple 765 and PTR, having tested for the team at Jerez last October. While AJS’s history as a motorcycle manufacturer is well-known, their time building four-wheel vehicles is almost forgotten. This included the manufacture of buses and two cracks at building a car. A rare machine from this second period of automobile manufacturing – an AJS ‘Nine’ from 1930 - recently went to auction with Burns & Co. in Melbourne.
