These days when a city prides itself on its design acumen, it celebrates with a week each year so that local design, architecture, interiors and products become the focal point for the national population and overseas travellers. Showroom doors are flung open and parties abound – think London, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Tokyo, Melbourne and Miami, to name but a few, as the list of cities grows exponentially each year. I love the location of the house, its proximity to the city. The area is semi industrial… and quiet. When did you produce this design? As a new build Concrete Conceal house is a glorious modern interpretation of a family home that marries functionality and form with a pared back aesthetic to achieve a stunning result. Designed by Tecture, the project is a credit to Ben Robertson, principal of the practice who, along with his team, has captured the vision of their client and delivered a project that enhances site and situation. As an object of desire, Wingnut & Co.’s ‘pot and spoon’ is at the top of the list. It is organic, tactile, supremely useful for lovers of condiments and a perfect marriage of stoneware and steel. Designed by Wingnut & Co. partners Anna Miller-Yeaman and Asuka Mew, the object is a fine addition to their ceramic collection of tableware, drinking implements, pots, vases, and small and large objects. The Brisbane interior design studio of multidisciplinary Australian practice, Cox Architecture has recently reinvented the workplace of infrastructure and environmental services company, Cardno. The new Brisbane fitout explores notions of ‘community’, expressing these through a series of clever spatial strategies and playful graphic mediums. The design distils city planning concepts, introducing active streets, flourishing parklands, engaging neighbourhoods and a metaphorical town hall, bringing efficiency, transparency and personality to the three-floor tenancy. The Cardno project was an exercise in restructuring a complex organisation with the aim of bringing cohesion to a diverse and disparate workforce. Bohemian Living The homes of artists and collectors are different from others in a way that is hard to define. Artist Greg Irvine comes close with, “This house is an extension of one of my paintings. Instead of painting with paint, I paint with objects.” The 20 artists whose homes Robyn Lea explores with her camera have each created an interior that defines their particular art. The Congress alone will have 500 expert speakers, 25 luminary keynote speakers and an audience of 3500.
