KEYSTONE STATE BUZZKILL Despite the coronavirus pandemic and the designation of medical cannabis businesses as essential services in many jurisdictions—police officers in Pennsylvania made over 20,200 arrests for cannabis possession during 2020. Arrest records from the Pennsylvania State Police showed that an average of 55 adults were arrested for cannabis possession in the state every day last year. The data was acquired by Chris Goldstein, regional coordinator for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). On February 16, a new bill, C-22, was introduced to end mandatory prison sentences for drug-related convictions and address racial justice as well. In a news conference, Justice Minister David Lametti expressed his hopes for this new bill. “We are turning the page on a failed Conservative criminal-justice policy,” he said at a news conference. “It was an approach that did not make our communities safer. It did not deter criminals. It did not make the justice system more effective or more fair. The recent launch of Jay-Z’s new cannabis brand, Monogram, isn’t beating around the bush when it comes to bringing attention to the systemic racism that is rooted in the War on Drugs. In early March, in partnership with the ad agency Mischief @ No Fixed Address, Monogram released eight striking black-and-white advertisements that brought attention to certain laws in states where cannabis isn’t legal. The ads pointed out wacky facts, such as how there are more states that allow you to marry a first cousin than states in which you can buy weed legally, making the hypocrisy of the situation an obvious one. It’s that time of year, once again, to explore the benefits of the cannabis industry on the US job market. According to Leafly’s “Jobs Report 2021,” which was created in partnership with Whitney Economics, an estimated 321,000 full-time jobs were supported by legal cannabis as of January 2021—everything from cultivation positions to budtenders and nearly everything in between. “To put that in perspective: In the United States, there are more legal cannabis workers than electrical engineers,” the report stated. “There are more legal cannabis workers than EMTs and paramedics. As a response to medical-cannabis legalization efforts, Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts really did claim, “If you legalize marijuana, you’re gonna kill your kids,” in an address regarding the newly proposed plan in the state. In order to justify that incredibly dated anti-cannabis stance, Ricketts referred to two instances of people who, on very high doses of cannabis, took their own lives. One was a 19-year-old who jumped from a balcony in 2014 after taking six times the recommended dose of edibles, and the other was a 23-year-old heavy dabber who died by suicide. Of course, these cases are incredibly tragic, but they are all instances of individuals with depression who unfortunately chose to take their own lives, not of cannabis causing insanity…

The Mississippi House recently killed a bill from the Senate, the hotly debated Senate Bill 2765, which would create a legislative alternative to the medical marijuana program that voters overwhelming voted for in November (Initiative 65). However, the Senate was able to revive it by adding it to the already-established Harper Grace’s Law, a piece of medical cannabis legislation that is up for reauthorization.
