This month marks the opening of two blockbuster exhibitions in Paris devoted to Martin Margiela, the iconoclastic Belgian designer who questioned not only the structure of garments but also that of the entire fashion system, and who famously declined to be photographed or give interviews. First up, “Margiela/Galliera, 1989–2009,” debuting at the Palais Galliera on March 3, traces the career of the creator without a face, whose logo-less designs pushed the scale of garments to extremes and exposed linings and raw seams. “Margiela, Les Années Hermès,” which opens at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs on March 22, explores his unlikely tenure as creative director of womenswear at the French luxury-goods house Hermès, from 1997 to 2003.
