Volkswagen has unveiled the interior of the new ID Polo ahead of the car’s launch later this year, showcasing the increased provision of physical buttons for key functions. SMART HAS BEGUN testing the #2, a Fortwo successor that will arrive later this year. The two-seat EV will be Smart’s new entry model and these photos show early mules testing the #2’s new Electric Compact Architecture. The platform is being developed jointly by parent companies Geely in China and Mercedes-Benz in Europe, given its European market focus. For this testing phase, the platform has been paired with a third-generation Fortwo body, which, said Smart, confirms that the #2 will offer similar proportions to the car it replaces. Mercedes-Benz design boss Gorden Wagener will step down in January, ending a 28-year career that radically reshaped both the styling of the production models and the internal design culture at the German car maker. The 56-year-old, who joined Mercedes in 1997 and has led its global design operations since 2008, will be replaced by Bastian Baudy, who currently leads design for the AMG performance brand. Wagener will leave the company on 31 January. It is at his own request and by mutual agreement. His departure closes a significant chapter in Mercedes’ design history. THE SAFETY CONCEPT of vehicles communicating with each other and the surrounding infrastructure has been under development in Europe for more than 20 years. Now it has come of age. Volkswagen says more than two million of its vehicles have ‘Car2X’ technology, which enables them to take advantage of “local swarm intelligence”, warning of traffic hazards and other relevant factors. It is available as standard or an option in a range of VWs, including the Golf, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tayron, Passat, ID 3, ID 4, ID 5 and ID 7. This is our most revealing look yet at Bentley’s first EV, which is due to be unveiled at the end of this year. Spied testing in the freezing conditions of northern Sweden, this mule of Crewe’s so-called Luxury Urban SUV has lost the chunky camouflage used by previous prototypes. Without it, a Bentayga-like bonnet, productionspec front lights and a wide and low front end are all visible alongside a monolithic shape that is clearly inspired by the recent EXP 15 concept. The weight of a Fabia vRS is potentially resting on this car’s shoulders. Should demand for the new Fabia 130 version be sufficient, Skoda might well decide to go the whole hog with its supermini. Does it do a good enough job to warrant a full-fat version? Yes. Would a vRS make it almost irrelevant? Also yes. The 130 gets its name from two sources: it makes 130kW (174bhp) and Skoda turned 130 last year. Among the many surprises Cameron Peters has up his sleeve is that although his 2002-reg Audi S8 is classed as Euro 3 for emissions purposes, it is, he tells me, exempt from London’s ULEZ charge. Generally speaking, only petrol cars certified as being Euro 4 and above (the classification was introduced in 2005) satisfy the NOx emissions standard used to determine the charge, making them exempt. British car industry breaks silence over sales figures In the past, British car “ manufacturers have been rather reluctant to issue any clear figures on their actual model production,” we reported in May 1969. “Now the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has compiled detailed statistics for the Big Four – British Leyland, Ford, Rootes and Vauxhall.” Car production and export figures had been obtainable as early as the 1900s, extracted from government trade documentation, but they were expressed in financial terms and didn’t distinguish between makers, let alone individual vehicle types. SKODA ISN’T RULING out a full-blown vRS comeback for the Fabia – even though the hot hatch was axed in 2014 because of sluggish sales. Sources have told Autocar that the recently unveiled warmed-up Fabia 130 (driven, p22), which produces 174bhp and marks the brand’s 130th anniversary, could help justify the business case for a fully fledged vRS. Behind the scenes, engineers are understood to be enthusiastic about the idea. A vRS would give Skoda the chance to demonstrate the potential of the Fabia’s platform while tapping into the firm’s impressive motorsport heritage, which includes eight WRC2 drivers’ championships in Fabias between 2015 and 2023. A DECISION ON whether the Renault 4 Savane 4x4 concept car will enter production will be taken within the coming weeks. Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive said he “will be pushing” for the four-wheel-drive model to make production as one of the “cherries on top of the cake” of Renault’s new range of small EVs. Speaking at the Car of the Year 2026 final event in Barcelona, Spain, Cambolive said the model would also extend the market appeal of the 4 in certain northern European countries where four-wheel drive is more desirable. That’s because its drivetrain adopts an additional electric motor to power the rear axle. The only delay in the decision to date had been one of making strategic priorities, said Cambolive.…

FORD HAS BECOME the strongest voice among UK car companies in calling for the government to follow the European Union in softening EV targets. The European Commission brought forward proposals in December that would allow combustion-engined cars to remain on sale after 2035 in the EU. The new laws are expected to be signed off by EU members and would require total tailpipe CO2 emissions from 2035 to be reduced by 90%, rather than 100%, compared with 2021. The previous 100% level effectively banned the sale of all non-EVs. In response, the majority of car firms in the UK have either been restrained or declined to comment when approached by Autocar. Being the inheritor of a long line of memorable hot hatches, the Cupra Leon has been suffering with something of a hierarchy problem. Nissan has chosen the name Wave for its version of the Renault Twingo electric city car and will rework the design with influence from its Pike retro cars, Autocar has learned. The Wave is due next year and will be built by Renault alongside the Twingo. It is expected to hit the same sub-£20,000 price point as the Twingo, thanks to the use of cheaper, lithiumiron-phosphate chemistry for its 27.5kWh battery. Mitsubishi will sell the Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV (pictured) and L200 pick-up truck in the UK when it returns this summer. Xpeng has been in the UK for less than a year, yet it has already updated its initial offering. The Chinese EV firm claims to have made “over 20,000 incremental developments” to the G6’s design, interior, handling and refinement.
