Our June issue celebrates the award-winning projects of the 2019 Australian Interior Design Awards, Australia’s leading awards program recognizing excellence in interior design. This year we received 551 entries, representing a variety of scales, budgets and strengths. This year’s award winners have used critical design thinking to dissect and investigate simple activities like a haircut, visiting a museum or going to work. The assemblage of award winners across the categories asserts the promising and robust state of our architecture and design industry and shows that design excellence is stretching to every corner of Australia – from the concrete tangle of downtown Sydney to a town in outback Queensland with a population of just 950. Designed by Tom Fereday with King Living, the ETO table integrates power, wireless charging and lighting seamlessly into one sophisticated minimal design allowing people to truly customize the table to suit their needs. Providing the first desk in the world to offer interchangeable lighting and charging accessories, the ETO table considers how people truly work and live. Including concealed power, USB and cable management, the ETO desk attempts to clear the unnecessary clutter of objects and cables normally associated with desks. A slim integrated drawer unit offers storage for everyday desk items, such as laptops and stationery. Designed by multi-award winning architecture firm Tzannes and developed and built by Lend Lease, International House is one of Australia’s first engineered-timber commercial workspaces. The large timber beams act both structurally and as a key design element to the clean and exposed interior setting. In keeping with the building’s minimalist interior and sound environmental credentials, including a 6-Star Green Star rating, a roller shading fabric and blind system was required to be a non-invasive addition to the timber structure, have strong green certification, be fully automated and feature a fabric with a clean visibility view-through when the shades are drawn. Winner Workplace Design Designer BVN Design statement — The refurbishment of BVN’s Sydney Studio presented the chance to rethink what the future of the practice may look like and how the environment could push into the future; supporting new ways of working given the era of disruption the architecture and construction industry is now entering. Through the engagement process key areas were identified, which informed the primary objectives for the 1,800-square-metre studio space. One area was unleashing the power of teams to drive the business – well-supported teams perform better. Last summer we were in the collective grip of Marie Kondo fever – asking ourselves if our sock drawer “sparked joy” and earnestly applying the “KonMari Method” to tidying up our homes, and by extension, our lives. Perhaps this is just another example of how in times of uncertainty in the world, we seek ways to create order in our own lives – and this time we had the book and the Tidying Up With Marie Kondo Netflix series to show us how to achieve it. What was fascinating to me was the succeeding conversation about the effect all of this tidying up had on our ability to think about and manage waste. It’s easy to forget, when you’re looking at a pendant light, say, hanging serenely above a dining table in a beautiful architecturally designed house, that each designed object – light, table, house – is the end point of a process. Sure, sometimes that process might start with an idea of beauty and move inexorably towards its neat resolution. More often, it’s characterized by iteration and reiteration, dead ends and U-turns, and general messiness. Sounds like hard work! Winner Public Design Designer Cox Architecture Design statement — Rising like a phoenix from the ashes of the original Waltzing Matilda Centre, the building is an exuberant celebration of the famous ballad. Using metaphors of an ancient landscape, the striking forms and crafted, tactile materiality draw visitors into the building’s cool, gorge-like interiors, an immersive sequence of towering, fluid spaces. The brief was to house Winton’s extensive collection of historical artefacts, memorabilia and collateral pertaining to the song, its authors and the region. The design creates maximum effect in visitor experience by carefully crafting space and materials. The $13-million budget was used sparingly, a task made challenging by the constraints of a remote site. The Australian Ballet centre by Hassell In refurbishing the Melbourne home of the Australian Ballet, Hassell set out to expand and renew. The design incorporates subtle details to meet the needs of the dancers. A central circular staircase, wide enough for two dancers in tutus to pass, mimics ballet shoe ribbon twisting up the ankles of dancers. A bespoke terrazzo tile, inspired by the pink hues and silk of the ballet shoe, is seen throughout. The space includes a public cafe, medical facilities and a world-class recovery room. There is something profoundly mysterious about the creative process. The source of inspiration continues to capture the attention of artists, corporations and scientists alike; what is it that allows people to create, and what defines the individual creative process? How can creativity be fostered daily in response to a brief, budget and timeframe? Held in Brisbane, a recent Artichoke Night School session saw four creatives reflect on their personal approach to the creative process. Winner Premier Award for Australian Interior Design Winner Retail Design Designer George Livissianis Design statement — The intent was to create an ultra-modern, minimal and futuristic salon within the old Taubman’s paint warehouse that would redefine the traditional salon experience. The brief was to create a flexible space within the 300-square-metre warehouse, so that the entire space could be cleared out and used for seminars and collaborations with designers and artists. The design team started the process looking for mobility – aeroplane trolleys, freight containers and music cases. The design team wanted to create hair station “pods” that could be wheeled in, opened up for an appointment and wheeled away again. Winner Hospitality Design Designer Carr Design statement — Briefed to capture “understated exclusivity,” the interior design is both lavish encounter and reminder of home. Anonymity is explored at street level. Fine lettering on the facade is the only clue that this might be a hotel. There is no lobby, no reception, just a fifteen-metre length of foyer lined by the continuous gesture of blackened, vertical steel blades from the facade contrasting with a tactile, board marked concrete wall opposite. With a 12-metre height restriction, and basement and ground floors largely dedicated to restaurant tenancy, the design would need to maximize yield and spaciousness. To accentuate space, bathrooms are centralized, facilitating a surprisingly voyeuristic detail. Winner Residential Decoration Designer Arent&Pyke Design statement — From a bed of soil inside the open living space of an industrial-style renovation at the back of a tiny weatherboard cottage, a ficus lyrata tree grows up the stairwell toward a skylit and retractable roof. The open plan encompasses the building’s majority – a hub for living and eating that opens to the garden – and although the wow-factor was architecturally established, this raw but refined aesthetic required warmth and ambience. Much of the interior design was already in place when we joined the project, but the furniture and lighting was yet to be resolved.
