This year the world slowly returned to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic. At the start of January, our office was still closed because of Omicron. That seems like such a long time ago! 2022 was the year the UK lost a Queen, gained a King and had not one but THREE Prime Ministers. We’ve crammed many of the year’s biggest news stories in pages 4-27, but that is just the start of it. After six years in prison in Iran, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was finally set free to return to the UK. She was arrested in 2016 on a visit to her parents in Iran. The Iranian government said she was plotting against it, but Zaghari-Ratcliffe denied the charges. She was released after the UK paid money it had owed Iran since the 1970s and was reunited with her husband and seven-year-old daughter on 17 March. Elsewhere, the 2022 Winter Paralympics (a big international sports contest for people with disabilities) began on 4 March in Beijing, China. The war in Ukraine continued and on 6 June the UK announced that it would supply Ukrainian forces with more weapons to defend the country against Russian attacks. The UK’s Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said, “The UK stands with Ukraine”. On 10 June in Stockholm, Sweden, activists Greta Thunberg, Vanessa Nakate and Malala Yousafzai teamed up to tell the world that educating girls could help solve climate change. (Climate change refers to long-term changes in global weather patterns, including rising temperatures). In the UK on 14 June, people marked the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire in London, in which 72 people died five years ago. American tennis star Serena Williams ended her long career this month. On 3 September Williams, who started playing when she was 14, played the last game of her 27-year career in New York, US. She described her life in tennis as “a fun ride”. World leaders paid tribute to Mikhail Gorbachev, whose funeral was held in Moscow, Russia on 3 September. Gorbachev, who died on 30 August aged 91, led the Soviet Union (a group of countries once ruled from Moscow, the capital of Russia) in the late 1980s. He helped end the Cold War, a period of tension between the Soviet Union and the US that lasted for most of the second half of the 20th century. He was described as “a towering global leader”. The winners of the Earthshot Prize were revealed on 2 December. Prince William handed out five prizes of £1 million each to people who had brilliant ideas for how to save the planet. One of the winners was Notpla, a UK company that uses seaweed to create an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic packaging. Saving the planet was also the mission of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference, COP15, which took place from 7 to 19 December in Montreal, Canada. Biodiversity is the variety of animals and plants living in a particular area. Representatives from countries around the world met to talk about how best to protect the Earth’s wildlife. Korben White The boy in a dress breaking down barriers. When Korben White was 12, he told his mother that he wanted to wear a gown to his school prom, and this year he made it happen. Korben, who is now 16, stepped out in a red, sequinned jacket with a ballgown skirt. He was greeted with loud cheers from pupils and staff at his school in Norfolk, England. The year began with the UK’s warmest New Year’s Day on record. On 1 January, the temperature rose to 16.3°C in London’s St James’s Park – the kind of weather that usually happens in late spring. Covid infections were falling across the UK, and by the end of the month many restrictions had been lifted in England, Scotland and Wales, such as limits on big crowds at sports matches. On 12 April Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, and Rishi Sunak were ordered to pay fines as punishment for going to parties at Downing Street during the Covid lockdown. Protests spread across Iran and then to other countries this month after the death of Mahsa Amini in September. The young woman died a few days after she was arrested for showing part of her hair in public, which is illegal for women in Iran. Many people believe she was treated badly by police. Thousands of young people, including schoolgirls, marched in protest and removed their headscarves. A lot of people were arrested and some died after police forces tried to stop the demonstrations. Hippos’ calls reveal friends Hippos are one of the largest land mammals on Earth, but scientists still don’t know much about them. They’re very difficult to get close to because they can be dangerous and they tend to spend most of the day in water. In February, we reported that scientists from France and Portugal, led by Nicolas Mathevon from France’s University of Saint-Etienne, found out that hippos can recognise their friends from their “wheeze-honks” (the noise hippos make). Police find slippery customers A slimy trail at Düsseldorf Airport in Germany helped customs officials to solve an unusual crime. Officers found a giant African land snail on the floor, and its gooey trail led directly back to some bags. Inside, there were 92 other snails, along with some meat and fish. They were being smuggled (moved secretly and illegally) to Germany from Nigeria, but the silvery slime trail gave the criminals away. All 93 snails were safely handed to an animal rescue service. Almost two years after the UK first went into lockdown in March 2020, this month all Covid-19 restrictions – such as having to wear masks in shops and on public transport – were lifted in England and Northern Ireland. Music and fun were celebrated this month at the Eurovision Song Contest. On 14 May, the Kalush Orchestra from Ukraine won first prize and the UK’s Sam Ryder came second. The winning country usually hosts the competition the following year but the war in Ukraine could make it difficult to organise such a big event there, so in 2023 the UK will host it instead. Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO (a military partnership of 30 countries). The countries have a long history of not taking sides in wars, but they both lie very near Russia and the invasion of Ukraine had worried them. On 1 August, the first ship carrying grain (such as wheat and barley) sailed from Ukraine across the Black Sea after the country agreed a deal with Russia. Before the deal, Russia had been stopping ships from leaving Ukraine by sea. Ukraine sells grain all over the world, so this action had caused food shortages in many countries. Tributes were paid to campaigner Roy Hackett, who died on 3 August at the age of 93. Hackett was one of the organisers of the Bristol Bus Boycott in 1963. A boycott is when people stop using something as a protest. This was a protest against the Bristol Omnibus Company, after it banned black people from working on its buses. The highest mountain in Wales was renamed this month. Mount Snowdon will now be known by its original name in the Welsh language, Yr Wyddfa, and the area where it is, the Snowdonia National Park, will be called Eryri. The National Park Authority said the move would help people connect with Welsh culture. On 2 November, the two sides in Ethiopia’s civil war (war between people in the same country) agreed to stop fighting. NASA changes asteroid path This year, NASA scientists managed something that sounds like a science fiction story. They changed the path of an asteroid (a small rocky object orbiting the Sun) by deliberately smashing a spacecraft into it. NASA’s aim was to prove it’s possible to protect Earth from any space rocks that might be heading our way. When an asteroid hit Earth 66 million years ago, it wiped out 75% of life on the planet, including the big dinosaurs. On 26 September, the DART spacecraft crashed into a 160-metre-wide asteroid called Dimorphos, which was about 6.8 million miles from Earth.
