If you’re a serious gamer who already has or plans to get an Xbox Series X, PS5 or a high-end AMD or NVidia PC graphics card, you need to be particularly careful about which TV you buy. The best features of these new gaming devices place some pretty extreme technical demands on the displays they connected to. Delivering 4K resolution at 120 frames a second and variable refresh rates, in particular, require TVs to carry the latest HDMI 2.1 connectors capable of handling data rates of 40Gbps or higher. Practically no budget TVs can provide even a single sufficiently specced HDMI 2.1 port to unlock these next-gen gaming features. But nor, actually, do many mid-range TVs. Final Audio has turned out everything from wildly expensive headphones to humble entry-level stuff that costs the same as a round of drinks. The UX3000 were worth the wait, though – the company has certainly taken its time to challenge the best noise-cancelling headphones, but it’s done so while playing its own game. Now that pretty much every TV you can buy boasts a native 4K resolution, it makes more sense than ever to buy as big a screen as you can. The bigger the screen, after all, the more you’ll benefit from all the extra pixels of detail and image density 4K has to offer. With large-screen HD TVs, for instance, you may well be able to see the visible pixel structure in the image, or notice jaggedness over curved or diagonal edges. These issues should largely disappear with a 4K TV, leaving the image looking more like a window onto reality than a mere TV screen. Obviously the term ‘good enough’ is highly subjective. For the most part, though, we’d say that no, with a few honourable exceptions the sound built into TVs isn’t good enough. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are both so-called ‘active’ formats of high dynamic range technology. This means that they both carry extra scene by scene picture information that compatible TVs can use to deliver more accurate representations of the image content. Dolby Vision also features advanced colour mastering and optimises its images for the specific TV they’re being fed into. All sounds great, but does your TV really need them? Throwing this question into sharp relief is the fact that most TVs either don’t support either format, or else only support one or the other. For anyone who wants an all-singing, all-dancing smartphone, the OnePlus 10 Pro is undoubtedly one of the best phones of the year. On top of this, it’s ever so slightly more affordable than most of its rival flagship devices. OnePlus has given this phone a bit of a design refresh and its new look feels a lot more elegant and grown-up than it did before. The back of the phone is covered in matte glass that shimmers rather than glows. Any review would have to admit that the Huawei P50 Pro is a fantastic phone – it’s good-looking, powerful and the camera system is stellar. But it does have two big problems holding it back: you will miss out on Google’s suite of apps and it also doesn’t have 5G support. Both are flaws that could be dealbreakers for a lot of people.
