The Miami Supercar Rooms (miamisupercarrooms.com), which opened in February in the city’s Wynwood Arts & Entertainment District, showcases cars from the collection of Elo, a former fashion model from England who restores, customizes, and collects cars. In 2004 he opened the London Motor Museum (londonmotormuseum.co.uk), where most of his nearly 250 vehicles are housed. The Supercar Rooms displays a rotating selection of more than 25 cars from his collection. A NEW SERIES OF open sports yachts, the Palmer Johnson Niniette (palmerjohnson.com) represents a collaboration between the Monaco-based boatbuilder and the French automaker Bugatti (bugatti.com). The latter company’s founder, Ettore Bugatti, called one of his boats Niniette, using the nickname that he had for his daughter Lidia. Palmer Johnson’s Niniette includes three models: 42, 63, and 88 feet. Pricing for the smallest model starts at about $2.25 million. The yachts feature a dark-blue carbon-fiber hull based on that of Palmer Johnson’s SuperSport series. They also display design elements that, the companies say, are inspired by classic Bugatti models and the more recent Veyron. The yachts accommodate four guests, and the interiors can be customized.…

“IN THE SPACE BETWEEN” is how Cécile zu Hohenlohe (available at Chamber Gallery, chambernyc.com) refers to her sculptural rings, whose stones appear to float on the hands. Each unique creation ($8,000 to $28,000) features rough and polished stones in a design that spans three fingers, with the open space between the gems serving as an integral part of that design. The designer uses precious and semiprecious stones, as well as minerals and meteorite. “The process is like an abstract painting,” says Hohenlohe. “I meditate over the stones, and over time a design comes forth organically.” She describes her jewelry’s mix of elements, such as the ring shown here with a chunk of lava, a rough aquamarine, and a faceted peridot, as the “tame and untamed.”…

INSTEAD OF CELEBRATING a day of grand touring with the traditional glass of Champagne, Rolls-Royce suggests dipping into its limited-edition Cocktail Hamper (about $46,300, rolls-roycemotorcars.com), a fully stocked kit for the mobile mixologist, with everything from platinum-trimmed glassware to a laser-cut monogrammed strainer. Created by Sina Maria Eggl, the marque’s accessories designer, with suggestions from experts at the Dorchester and 45 Park Lane hotels in London, the 15 hampers are fashioned from American walnut and trimmed with leather used for Rolls-Royce interiors. THE EAST COAST of New Zealand’s North Island looks like a long-lost version of the Southern California coast: largely unpopulated, framed by mountains, and fringed with wild vegetation. The pristine nature of this Pacific Ocean region owes much to its rigid ownership laws, under which the majority of the land is controlled by either the local government or New Zealand’s native Maori people. THE BRITISH-BUILT McLaren 650S Spider proved the most formidable challenger to Ferrari’s 488 GTB, impressing our judges enough to finish in a not-too-distant second place. “It’s total perfection and fun,” said Alan Mark. Added Diane Zeiger, “The design, driving performance, and interior electronics are a step above the Ferrari.” Inspired by the McLaren P1 and deemed a notch above the 12C, the mid-engine, open-top 650S Spider shares the latter’s carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer monocoque tub, which derives from the marque’s Formula 1 cars. The 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine pumps out 641 hp and 500 ft lbs of torque. MERCEDES-AMG HAS put performance on the boil with—some think—the first true Mercedes-Benz sports car since the original 300 SL of the 1950s. WHEN OUR JUDGES ranked the BMW 750i xDrive highest among the large luxury sedans in this year’s competition, they favored it over cars that cost roughly two (Mercedes-Maybach S600) and three times (Bentley Mulsanne Speed) as much. Tara Maw described it as “the ultimate controlled luxury sedan” in reference to such new features as Gesture Control, which enables you to accept and reject calls and adjust the stereo volume using hand motions. THE JUDGES REACHED a consensus about the Cadillac CTS-V. “This is not your father’s Cadillac” proclaimed Lee Applbaum, Faheem Hasnain, Dick Johnson, Jeremy Mancheski, Don Quigley, and Gary Sekulow. Nor is it “your grandfather’s” (Jonathan Ko), “your sister’s” (Tom Mantione), or “your grandmother’s” (Mike Karns and Larry Mueller). The CTS-V is the fastest production car Cadillac has ever built. Powered by a 640 hp supercharged V-8 engine, it dashes from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. THE 911 TARGA 4 GTS didn’t receive as many first-place votes as some of its higher-powered and higher-priced competitors, but many judges said that of all the Car of the Year entrants, the Porsche is the vehicle they would most likely buy. “It’s a true driver’s car” said Trevor Philips. “It’s not the most powerful, but it offers the best experience between car and driver” The 3.8-liter 6-cylinder engine produces 430 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque. MANY OF THE judges’ comments about the Mulsanne Speed concerned whether it would be better to drive Bentley’s flagship sedan yourself or hire a chauffeur and take a seat in the back. Ravi Mehta would choose the latter. “Why would you want to sit in the front seats when the rear is so amazingly comfortable?” he asked. In addition to comfort, the Mulsanne Speed can offer the convenience of a refrigerator and a trio of crystal Champagne flutes. MAYBACH, A BRAND that Daimler revived from 2002 until 2012, has been reborn again, this time as Mercedes-Maybach. The inaugural model is the S600, and it’s essentially a Mercedes-Benz S-Class that has been sent to finishing school to add more technology, length, and luxury. With a starting price under $190,000, the S600 represents considerable value compared to the last Maybach models: The 57 cost about twice as much as the S600 when new, and the 62 was priced even higher. Those prices, coupled with the recession, contributed to poor sales and led to Maybach’s demise. Nevertheless, some judges expressed a preference for the old marque. PRIVATE AVIATION has seen a remarkable transformation in the last five years. The basic business models of fractional ownership, jet cards, and charter remain as solid as ever, but they have been joined by start-ups that are focused on enhancing value through creative usage programs. Even the most established names have reinvented themselves by adopting new technologies, partnering with sophisticated companies outside of private aviation, and, in one case, creating the most upscale fleet in the industry. THE F40 IS fabled for its inimitable looks and turbocharged technology—and for being the final production car developed under the direction of the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari. Known as Il Commendatore, Enzo died in 1988, bringing to an end his absolute rule over the world’s most famous marque. Ferrari launched the F40 in 1987 in celebration of its 40th year in business. This model followed the limited-production 288 GTO as the company’s ultimate road-going statement and remained in production through 1992. EQUINE ANALOGIES USUALLY abound when car enthusiasts talk about a Ferrari. Such was the case when the Car of the Year judges discussed this year’s winner, the 488 GTB. APPROPRIATELY, GIVEN THE company’s namesake, there was an alternating current of adulation and criticism for what may be the most polarizing automobile ever to participate in a Car of the Year event. The Tesla was praised for its performance and technological advances and panned for its lack of soul. But many of the S P90D’s fans liked the car enough to give it a first-place vote, which accounts for its finishing as high as it did in the rankings. The contest’s S P90D was equipped with Ludicrous mode, a $10,000 option that enables the car to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 2.8 seconds. FOR MORE THAN 60 years, America’s sports car—as General Motors has dubbed the Corvette—has competed against premium-priced European models, sometimes cleaning their clocks with its power and performance but often lacking their refinement. The latest Corvette Z06 has none of the rough edges that plagued its predecessors, according to just about every judge who drove the contest’s red convertible. “It finally delivers on the boyhood dream, with comfort and finish to match performance ” said Brent Holden. THIS CONVERTIBLE IS the top-of-the-line variant of Jaguar’s F-Type sports cars, and though it costs more than $100,000, James Early called it “an unexpectedly good car for the price” Maybe he wasn’t expecting so much power for that amount of money. The Jag’s 5-liter supercharged V-8 produces 550 hp and 502 ft lbs of torque, putting it “on the threshold of supercar designation,” according to Gary Spratling. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, enabling a zero-to-60-mph time of 3.9 seconds. “They need to build an autobahn in the U.S. to let this car run,” said Don Quigley. Always the innovator, Flexjet has built its fractional ownership program into one of the most successful business models in private aviation. The new Red Label by Flexjet, launched last September, promises to completely redefine fractional ownership, from enhancing owners’ relationships with their pilots to creating the highest standards in concierge service to designing elegant, luxuriously appointed cabins that are truly unique in the fractional world. “The most intelligent private aviation solution” is more than a clever slogan for Wheels Up, which has transformed the private-aviation landscape just two years after being launched. This is the second time Kenny Dichter has disrupted private aviation with an innovative business model. In 1999 he pioneered the concept of the world’s first jet card by founding Marquis Jet. The idea was so successful that every other national provider designed their own jet card programs to compete with Marquis. Dichter has once again rewritten the rules of private aviation.
