The holidays evoke memories of family, friends and traditions we hold dear to our hearts. It’s always nostalgic for me as I open the boxes stored with favorite Christmas decorations—each piece I unwrap reminds me of different times in my life, places we’ve lived and stages as my boys were growing up. And I can trace the different stages of my quilting through these Christmas decorations as well. Our Christmas stockings were made early in my quilting career—simple squares tied with yarn at each patch intersection with our names cross-stitched at the top. Getting Started Preparing Your Fabric We recommend that you pre-wash your fabrics. A shrinkage factor is included in our yardage computations. Techniques Machine Piecing It is important to cut accurately and to sew exact ¼" seams. Templates Trace the patterns on template plastic and cut out accurately. Effective Practice Tips Preparing to Practice Now that your longarm is set up and ready to go, you’re probably wondering where to start. Practice will help you master your machine, but perfect practice will lead to a perfect quilting technique. First and foremost, practice on quality fabric. Old sheets or inexpensive fabric may have a high thread count or heavy sizing. This often creates needle deflection that leads to skipped stitches, broken needles, or causes timing issues or damage to the machine. It’s not worth it. Additionally, you won’t experience the correct feel of the machine, which will throw off your rhythm. I like to start each project with a fresh needle.
