Apple has announced that for the second fiscal quarter of 2022, the company posted $97.3 billion in revenue, up 9 per cent year over year. After an App Store policy came to light in April that threw countless apps into limbo, Apple has issued a clarification (fave.co/3P4LVz3) about its App Store Improvements process that will give developers much more time to update their apps. Apple also clarified that the policy isn’t new. Since 2016, when the App Store Improvements process was launched, some 3 million apps have been removed from the store to “ensure apps work for the vast majority of users and support our latest innovations in security and privacy”. Apps that were previously downloaded continue to work, but new users will not be able to find them in the App Store. The addition of Live Text in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS 12 Monterey (for models that support it) brings a new layer of utility to photos and other images. Click or tap an image, and you can select words or an entire password or translate text. But searching against that text is trickier. Photos for iOS, iPadOS and macOS don’t include a way to search for recognized text. Seemingly, Live Text works only on demand. Long after its initial announcement back in August, and following considerable controversy over an as-yet-released component, Apple is expanding to the UK an iPhone feature designed to protect children against sending or receiving sexual content. Communications Safety in Messages eventually launched as part of the iOS 15.2 point update in December. Until now, however, this has been limited to the US. The Guardian broke the news that Apple announced plans to bring this feature to the UK, although the time frame remains unclear. If you’re waiting for Apple to finally unveil an iPhone with a USB-C port, we have bad news: it’s not happening this year. But there’s still some serious intrigue in prospect for the iPhone’s lone port in the months ahead. Let’s start with the iPhone 14. According to iDropNews (fave.co/3FxBfEH), Apple is “working on [USB] 3.0 speeds for the iPhone 14 Pro connector”. The current Lightning port is rated for USB 2.0, which has an abysmally slow transfer rate of 480Mb/s. Sometimes Apple loses track of all the features they add in new releases – and how they interact. The Focus options added in iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS 12 Monterey fall into this category. Rather than a single feature, Focus wraps in different kinds of purposes and notification controls under one umbrella.
