A NEW wonder drug is poised to dramatically improve the life of cystic fibrosis victims! The medication, called Orkambi, drastically improved the lung function of child patients in a mere two weeks. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder which mostly affects normal breathing, but can also weaken kidneys, the intestine, liver and pancreas. The genetic defect causes the production of a rogue protein that disrupts the process in which water and chloride are transported. “It’s a major step forward,” says Nick Medhurst, the head of policy at the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. “What these results show is that it can prevent irreversible damage.” In a clinic trial of about 200 kids, those taking Orkambi were able to inhale 10 percent more oxygen than those using a placebo.
