The Linux Foundation has formed a group to pay for research to improve Chromium browsers, in a blow to Mozilla’s Firefox.
Chromium is the source code Google uses for Chrome. It’s open source, letting other companies use it to build their own browsers. Microsoft’s Edge runs on Chromium, as do Brave, Opera and Vivaldi.
Firefox is the only major browser to use its own different code, called Gecko.
The Linux Foundation, which promotes the use of open-source software and operating systems, says the new Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers will help to “remove barriers to innovation” (see www.snipca.com/53504).
It added that Google, Meta, Microsoft and Opera have all committed to fund the project.
If these efforts pay off and attract more users, it could further reduce Firefox’s market share. This currently…
