Studio Constantine can be found on the ground floor of a warehouse in Hawthorn, a Melbourne suburb. The green area surrounded by a mix of contemporary and colonial architecture is just minutes from the city centre and metres from the Yarra River. WHISKEY WORLDS JAMESON – THE DECONSTRUCTED SERIES by Greg Coulton and Pond Design Stockholm www.gregcoulton.com The new super-premium Deconstructed Series of Jameson Irish whiskey focuses on taste rather than age. For the packaging and labelling, Pond Design Stockholm tasked illustrator and designer Greg Coulton with visually bringing to life the sensation of tasting each one. “After being supplied with the tasting notes, I built a profile around each element – its natural environment, heritage and visual properties,” says Coulton, who captured the character and personality of the whiskies through a series of visual narratives. “The most challenging part was the sheer volume of work,” he continues. “With a front and back label, plus the large-scale pack itself across each of the three bottles, it came to over 50 full-detail drawings…

Earlier this year, Birmingham-based LIFE Agency put out a call for interns. James Victore runs an independent design studio “hell-bent on world domination”. He’s an author, designer and teacher, who strives to make work that is “sexy, strong and memorable”. Victore’s art has been exhibited at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and other museums around the globe. “I am a pretty good designer,” he says. “At least the MoMA thinks so. But I am a much better teacher. SELF-PROMO WITH STAMINA London-based animation director and designer James Curran knows the self-promotional power of a personal project. In 2011, his unofficial title sequence for The Adventures of Tintin brought him widespread exposure and, famously, a job offer from Steven Spielberg on his next film. Since then, Curran has viewed personal projects as his priority – which is why he embarked on a 30-day ‘Gifathon’ during a month’s holiday in New York last year. Smoking Dynamite is one of the images for the main campaign. I originally had an image in my head of a girl smoking a flower – since the season’s clothing line was centred around flowers – and her breathing out coloured smoke. However when I talked about it to a few other people in the studio, smoking a flower didn’t quite feel powerful or irreverent enough. I thought about it a bit longer and came up with the dynamite concept. The first step was to do a pencil/computer line drawing and colouring test to get the composition done. Once it was sketched out, one of our designers, Daniel Forero, mocked up the concept by compositing many different photos together in Photoshop. From there, we collected a lot of different makeup…

Themed ‘design city’, Design Manchester’s one-day conference in October explored the way in which we move through cities, and the different opportunities that city spaces offer to engage, assist, inform and delight. It was one of 37 events hosted over 12 days as part of the Design Manchester festival – now in its fourth year – which saw a wide range of exhibitions, workshops and design fairs taking place across the city.
