In September 2021, Robert Durst, then 78, was found guilty of the murder of Susan Berman. Prosecutors said Susan had been shot at point-blank range, in an execution style killing, to prevent her from telling police what she knew about Kathie’s disappearance. They claimed that Susan helped cover up the killing of his ex-wife by providing him with a false alibi, impersonating Kathie with a phone call after she vanished in 1982. Appearing frail and in a wheelchair, Durst was sentenced to life in prison. In October 2021, Durst was then charged with the murder of Kathleen – ‘Kathie’ – McCormack Durst, almost 40 years after she disappeared.
