Staying at the Caravan and Motorhome Club site at Lleithyr Meadow close to St Davids in south Wales was the perfect choice for any caravanner who likes to walk, surf, or tour the Pembrokeshire coast. This site, has become one of our favourites. From the site it’s a 25-minute walk into St Davids itself or it’s about a ten-minute brisk walk down to Whitesands Bay which is utterly glorious. It’s a sheltered sandy bay, with a car park offering a basic café and toilet facilities. You have to pay to park all day but, by 6pm, the car park is full of locals who are surfing, paddleboarding or simply walking their dogs on the beach (dogs are not permitted on the beach after 1 May). Off-grid caravanning usually means campsites with no mains electricity and very limited facilities and it’s becoming increasingly popular among family campers, who want a more ‘authentic’ experience. You’re still on a proper, official campsite, but it has that feeling of roughing it. There are no neat, hedge-lined pitches with electric hook-up posts; you can pitch anywhere – whether it’s in among the trees, on sand dunes or on the banks of a river. Campfires are allowed, in fact are encouraged, and there might even be some traditional activities on offer, such as bushcraft and fishing. As I was hoping to hike in the USA the following spring, I needed a way of maintaining some level of fitness during the off-season, which is why I took a trip to Cornwall for some hiking on the South West Coast Path. An advantage of Cornwall is the ability to find campsites virtually on the coastal path, so no driving is required. My first destination was Trewethett Farm, located right on the coast southwest of Bude. With a mixture of hardstanding and grass, some with amazing views of the Willapark Headland, my pitch was only 50m from the coastal path. Both the Dart and Tyne are four-berth models and the Avon is a six-berth. Being a mathematician, I love symmetry and Blickling Hall, a National Trust property near Aylsham, has lines of symmetry all over it. Yes, I could live here – so long as I could keep all the riff raff out! Meanwhile, I have to cope with being just one of the riff raff. The walled garden is pretty and colourful. However, around the other side of the house, the parterre gardens are astonishing! Yew topiaries, paths, lawns and flower beds all lead the eye in a wonderfully symmetrical way towards the house. Until a couple of years ago, lounges were a fairly predictable element of caravan layouts. The standard parallel configuration, plus a few U-shaped lounges (notably in continental caravans), and the rare L-shaped lounge format, summed up the choice in the market. England’s official tourist board, VisitEngland, has revealed the 100 winners of this year’s Recognition of Service Excellence (ROSE) Awards, ten of which are holiday parks and glamping sites. The ROSE Awards are given to just 100 accommodation providers including campsites and holiday parks, each year.
