We’d had Rutland in our sights for a while, following a day visit to one of the Birdfairs at Rutland Water Nature Reserve. We’d vowed to return, spend time with binoculars and birds, and have a look at England’s smallest county. The day was sunny, bright and wintry-clear as we drove across no less than five counties to our destination, the rolling countryside taking us through what felt like the very heart of rural England. Next morning, we opened the blinds to the promise of a good day at Rutland Water. Rutland’s countryside appears unchanged by time – a pastoral scene from a painting, almost. Mere yards away, maybe even on the exact spot on which I’d stood, William the Conqueror had set foot in England for the first time. Our Easter trip saw us heading down the M4 into south Wales – it’s been more than two years since we’ve headed over the bridge. The first big change was the fact that tolls on the M4 crossing into Wales have all gone; removing a bit of a barrier between England and Wales was a very welcome change. I thought I’d tell you about the time we went to Haweswater Reservoir in Mardale, back in the autumn, as it was such a memorable day out in the hills.
