You probably already know that the EDC (Everyday Carry) knife long has supplanted the tactical folder as the cutter of choice among most of today’s knife enthusiasts. It’s not that BLADE® has taken a poll or anything. No, all you need do is scour knife websites, magazines, factory catalogs and other sources of edged tools. In most all, you will find EDCs and mentions of them just about everywhere and tactical folders hardly anywhere. Editor’s note: Last time we outlined the questions you should ask the maker. This time, we cover some of the things that you either probably should not ask—or at least should think through thoroughly before doing so. Custom knifemakers are, for the most part, reasonable people. Actually, they’re a pretty likable lot. Engage one in conversation and it’s likely to be a pleasant experience. Ask a maker about a knife and the discussion enters another dimension, particularly if it develops into one between a seller and potential buyer. Questions are part of the exchange of information, and just about any inquiry is fair. However, it pays to be courteous and respectful and to remember that courtesy and respect go both ways. The cover is a capsule of some of today’s leading EDC knives. The BBM V2 framelock folder (page 22) is a collaboration between custom knifemakers Nick Churpin and Robert Carter. The 3-inch blade is tumbled Nitro V stainless steel and the frame is Ash-Rub-finished titanium. It went by gent’s knife or Sundaygo-to-meeting knife, the latter where the hard-working sodbuster was laid down on the day of rest for something to better match the formal Sunday duds.
