“how do you like me now?”

You don’t have to make this journey on your own! Pick good people to help you! Recently on another drive between clinics one of my favourite songs by Toby Keith came thumping through the stereo. The song is about rubbing an ex-love’s nose in your success; something I am sure many of us have wanted to do over the years. It made me ponder the way that we, as horse people and in our general lives, are so influenced by what others think of us and how the world perceives our success. Often at clinics, people attend who are really battling with nerves or with their own and others’ expectations of what they should be able to do with their horse, when in reality the only person’s opinion that matters is their own. I am…

soybean hulls – the healthy alternative for lactating mares and their foals

A racehorse and a showjumper have very high energy, protein and other nutrient needs to perform at high levels. But, did you also know that lactating mares, those producing milk over the first few months after the birth of their foals, require just as much or even more nutritional support than these high-level equine athletes? Lactating mares need plenty of energy, protein and key minerals to feed their foals, milk. Did you know? • Milk is mostly water – Mare’s milk is about 90% water, with the exception during the first 12 hours parturition (after the foal is born) when it contains the vital colostrum. The remaining 10 to 12% is made up, on average, of lactose (6.5%), protein (2.2%), fats (1.6%), calcium (0.1%), phosphorous (slightly less than calcium), magnesium (0.01%), and very…

hooked on cutting

Horses had always been one of the great loves of Kathryn Jacobson. While in her early teens, she really enjoyed having them in her life, and like many horse-crazy teenagers, rode them as much as she could, took them to Pony Club, made many friends and had a ton of fun. ‘Unfortunately,’ Kathryn begins. ‘I sold my horses after I finished High School, but really missed them. After a long break of not having them, I was very happy to finally bring horses back into my life about seven or eight years ago, and I was determined that this time, they would stay.’ Kathryn bought a young Australian Stockhorse, her original plan being to compete in the fast-paced sport of Campdrafting. However, she found her young horse, at that stage, a little…

goondiwindi polo club celebrates 110 years!!!

It wasn’t quite the celebration the Club expected with the cancellation of their social event due to the recent border closure. However, it was wonderful to see the horses and players gracing the 'Morella' field at Boggabilla to celebrate 110 years of Polo with their annual signature Tournament. Moving the Tournament to private fields south of the Queensland border meant the Club could accommodate all travelling teams in the spirit of organised sport! Playing amongst the local border teams of Goondiwindi and North Star were southern NSW counterparts Scone, Gunnedah, Tamarang, and the renowned Packer backed team Ellerston. The field played beautifully, creating a fine spectacle of equine brilliance and horsemanship at its best! The A Grade home-town team of Goondiwindi had an adrenaline pumping game versus Scone to take out the prized Welltown…
