the best (worst) advice i have ever heard about buying horses

Over the years I have heard so many different ideas about buying horses that I could write a book! But instead I have picked the best (or should I say worst) ones I have ever heard and listed them here for you! But of course I am not listing them here to be funny; I am listing them so that any of you who are looking at buying a horse in the future can be sure to not make any of the mistakes listed here. And to anyone selling, hopefully this will be something you can think about when you talk to your horse’s potential new owners. When buying a horse (as I am sure many of you know) there is a lot of time and money that goes into finding a…

st heliers heavy horse field days

The 25th Anniversary of the St Heliers Heavy Horse Field Days took place on the third weekend in May, attended by over 70 horses with a range of exhibits from led classes, ploughing and vehicle turnouts. In celebration of the event’s 25th year, the Field Days continued to provide a trip back in time for young and old alike. The event, held at the Correctional Facility in Muswellbrook, provides a full weekend of connection between the modern world and the way things used to be done. In our led classes, we had a strong showing of Clydesdales and Shire horses, matched with strong exhibits of Percherons and the Australian Draught. In the plough paddock, our experienced judge noted that this was one of the best attended plough events on the East…

michael rapley

“I don't know, what I don't know” Born to a life on the land, his passion for horses began on the family property at Mudgee, NSW. This is where Michael Rapley inherited his father’s passion for the horses; heavy horses were used in the day to day running of the family property instead of modern machinery. His father was a police officer, eventually they moved with his employment, spending time in rural areas, including Coonamble and Tamworth. When his father retired, they moved back to the family farm at Mudgee. “I spent most of my holidays at our Mudgee farm or Grandparents property near Wellington,” recalls Michael. “I have had horses around me my whole life. My father had a passion for horses, and he would use heavy horses over tractors for…

roma cutting show

The last weekend of May, the small town of Roma in western Qld with a population of close to 7000 people came alive. The sport of Cutting is growing and growing to the extent that this show, had the highest number of nominations ever at a weekend show. An incredible 645 nominations. The SQCHA and their small subcommittee including Jamie McConachy, Kathy Mitchell, Andrew and Renee Richardson, knew they had a massive job in front of them and to their credit this show was a huge success, with everyone enjoying themselves. A big thank you to the cattle donors, Hamilton Park Wagyu, Brendan Fitzgerald, and Doce Pastoral Company. The road trains provided by Henry’s Livestock and McCutcheon Transport flowed in constantly over the 5 days bringing the cattle to Basset…

dion assenbruck anything is possible

With horses, Dion Assenbruck is a great believer in that a person will get out of it what they’re willing to put in. So, if they work hard enough, their dreams can turn into reality, and it all comes down to having that can-do attitude. Everyone has bad days, but as a friend once told him;"Don’t unpack your bags, cos tomorrow’s a new day!" Dion is an unassuming, simple guy who likes living the simple life. Born and raised in Townsville, North Queensland, as a kid, he never stopped thinking about horses, and yes, he’s still the same! Although his life has always revolved around his family, friends and horses, Dion also takes his work seriously, and it sounds like he’d be one fantastic employee to have! ‘I work full time Monday…
