Right now, I should be in OHMYGOD, IT’S THE WORLD CUP mode... and up until a few days ago, I was. But then the A-League semi-finals happened – and I fell back in love with our domestic game again. What an absolutely amazing couple of games that was. Newcastle Jet Riley McGree went from hipsters’ bolter tip for the Socceroos to global fame literally overnight. That scorpion kick goal will be played and played and played throughout his career now. Unless he does it again. No pressure though, but, you know, do it again, Riley. DO IT AGAIN!!! DO IT NOW!! And then there was that epic Big Blue semi between Melbourne Victory and Sydney. A five goal thriller that went to extra time – and Victory scored every one of the…

we’ve done it before...

...we can do it again. Flashback to Germany 2006 and the odds were stacked against Australia. Our first World Cup in 32 years and an (undeserved) reputation for agricultural football. For 84 minutes of our first game against Japan, it looked like the critics would be proved right. Then up stepped Cahill and Aloisi and bang! We won 3-1 in the dying moments. A 2-0 loss to Brazil followed but then it came down to the game against Croatia. Once more, with 11 minutes left on the clock, we needed a goal... and Kewell was there. Australia were through to the last 16...…

The now-36-year-old has tales to tell about Russia, having spent the best years of his career at Dinamo Moscow during a lucrative six-year stint where he met his wife, Kristina, building a house together - which he still calls home – two minutes from the club. But Wilkshire also has plenty of other stories to tell, from being frozen out at Bristol City to winning Guus Hiddink’s adoration which was the catalyst for his career…

1 “HELLO... IS IT NON-LEAGUE YOU’RE LOOKING FOR?” USA Las Vegas If there’s one thing that Lionel Richie is known for, it’s his willingness to throw his weight behind clubs threatened by relegation from the Football League. Hartlepool, Aldershot, Kidderminster Harriers: Lionel has supported them all (probably). This season he posed with a Chesterfield top to support the ailing Spireites, ahead of a summer concert. “Good luck to Chesterfield for the rest of the season!” he said, in a quote that definitely wasn’t made up on his behalf. “Looking forward to performing at the legendary Proact Stadium in June.” Legendary indeed... 2 WHAT A PAIR OF CLOWNS England Accrington Strange times at Accrington Stanley, where two Ronald McDonalds turned up at the Wham Stadium after an odd dispute between the EFL and the club’s chairman, who was…

THE LEAD UP We finished fourth in the A-League and it was an elimination final against Adelaide United. Of course, we were not necessarily happy with how the season ended up. Like always, finals are very special, you take them very seriously, these are the games every footballer wants to play in. We were really confident we would have a good game. We went in with big motivation, Adelaide played very difficult for us, but we believed, we stayed disciplined and we got rewarded. THE MATCH After a goalless first-half Nikola Mileusnic put Adelaide up 1-0 in the 57th minute and of course it knocked the stuffing out of us a bit. We thought we worked really hard in the first-half and I thought we didn’t deserve to go down. It was then…
