THE THREE BUILDINGS THAT HAVE INFLUENCED MY LIFE THE MOST ARE ONES THAT I HAVE NEVER BEEN INTO, AND, IN ALL THREE CASES, HAVE NEVER EVEN LAID EYESON. There’s my father’s family house in Wills Road, in Durban, which was appropriated under the National Party in the 1950s, and there’s the modest residence in VS Naipaul’s great novel A House for Mr. Biswas, which helped me to imagine being a writer and left me with the hope of one day having a home of my own. Peeping out of a narrow street in Joburg’s Hyde Park is a mysterious house. Owned by a couple with two small children, the house is characterised by many built-in spaces that are functional and doesn’t leave much room to stare at the details. “The owners wanted things to be robust and solid” says principal architect Enrico Daffonchio of Daffonchio & Associates Architects. “What inspired me was the modernist tradition of the 1920s – I’d call the style of the house tropical modernism.” It shows in the floor-to-ceiling glass doors enclosing the living area that slide all the way to the walls. Cliff de Wit’s parents retired to live in the Cradle on what was once a farm and is now incorporated in Khatlhampi Private Reserve. “We found ourselves visiting every other weekend, and wanted a place of our own here” says Cliff. Eskom keeps leaving us in the dark, so we’re all for exquisite light fixtures that shine whether they’re switched on or off. You could be forgiven for thinking this range of Shape Up lights consisted of delicate pieces of modern jewellery when in fact collages of abstract lampshades are suspended in sculptural compositions via a network of cords and hubs. What made you start photographing doors? The power of the hashtag! I was in New York in 2012 and my then girlfriend discovered Doors of New York while browsing NYC hashtags on Instagram. We thought it could work in Cape Town because of the diverse architectural influences. Do you take your camera everywhere? THERE ARE MANY HOUSES WE PASS THROUGH DURING OUR LIVES. Some of them remain with us, and we are able to return to them long after they are gone. One such house was a farmhouse in KwaZulu-Natal, just over the hill of the boarding school I attended between the ages of 10 and 14. I first came to know this house because my mother wanted to buy a Welsh pony from the farmer’s wife. We came down the evening before my first day at that school and were invited to spend the night. The farmer was a man from Yorkshire originally. He had a strong, impenetrable accent and pale-blue eyes, and he was always making jokes I didn’t understand. WHEN I WAS A CHILD, BACK IN THE ’70S, WE MOVED A LOT. I remember us living in different towns and cities in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, sometimes in houses with large verandas, another time in a flat on the 17th floor. Once, there was a smallholding with an orchard, but we didn’t stay long enough to see what would grow beyond the blossoms in springtime. As a young adult in the ’80s, I perpetuated this habit. The Swartberg is extraordinary. It is time-consuming to get to Prince Albert, which has, to an extent, protected the things that make the area special. The light on the mountains changes from hour to hour and day to day. There is very little light pollution, so the night sky is profoundly beautiful. I love Prince Albert. I was offered the land in a private sale through a friend and could not resist the site with its dramatic views of the mountains. It is within walking distance of Prince Albert, but also has the sense of being remote and connected to the Karoo landscape. There was nothing on the site to begin with. The use of planters as an interior and exterior design feature got a major boost when Peter van der Post launched Indigenus in 2014 with a collection of contemporary planters by three top South African designers. “The 365 Days of Origami Project got me recognised both locally and internationally as an artist and allowed me to connect with people and brands. It enabled me to do this as a full-time job. You think you’re lost when you turn into Sussex Street on your way to visit @home furniture buyer Lize Viljoen in Woodstock. The buildings lining the narrow street are either derelict or seem abandoned, and a couple of scrappy cars hug the pavement. As you stop to double-check directions on your phone, your eye catches a bright, renovated building a little further along named Sussex Studios. It’s then you realise you’re in the middle of another neglected Woodstock pocket undergoing gentrification, where industrial renovations become homes and businesses for creative urbanites. Just like Sussex Studios, a 51-year-old building that was a panel-beating shop and factory before architect Etienne Britz of Boukuns Architecture & Design turned it into 19 apartments. At three floors, 21 Rose Street in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap stands tall compared with some of its residential neighbours. The earliest known record of the early Dutch building pops up at around 1817, when it started life as a wooden clog factory. Nearly two centuries and several incarnations later, including stints as a button factory, a residence and most recently an art gallery, it has found new owners in the advertising agency Radar. Half-British and half-Kenyan, Kelly Mara Withey moved to Paris 10 years ago to study fashion design. And then she moved to Cape Town and opened the three-storey Maison Mara boutique in De Waterkant, home to labels such as Kenzo, Balenciaga, Jil Sander, Chloé, Proenza Schouler and Margiela. When it came to the interior design, Kelly enlisted the help of Robert Sherwood, founder and design director of Robert Sherwood Design. At the AJ Ceramics studio in Khayelitsha, Adonis Ndimande and a team of seven create ceramic grater plates capable of finely grating foods like garlic, ginger, hard cheese and chocolate. They pour clay into moulds, fire, paint and glaze the pieces and fire them a second time for 9 to 12 hours. We love the plain white grater that Adonis makes, but most of his final products feature the bright hues characteristic of the Xhosa culture. “Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected,” wrote South African writer William Plomer.
