On 27 January, around 50 survivors of the Holocaust gathered for a ceremony at Auschwitz in Poland to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. They were joined by world leaders from 54 countries, including King Charles III, France’s President Emmanuel Macron and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
What was the Holocaust?
The Holocaust was when six million Jewish people were killed during the Second World War (1939–1945) simply for being Jewish. During this period, millions of other people were also killed, including Polish, Sinti and Roma people, black people, gay people and people with disabilities.
