The plumbing systems for braking and fuel on a Mini have components located around the car, as opposed to the cooling and heating which is confined to the engine area (plus the heater) and is a subject in its own right. All plumbing needs to be maintained to a high standard but the braking system hydraulics and the fuel system even more so in that they play a big part in the safety of the car. Looking back at feature cars from the first 30 years MiniWorld 1982 MODIFIED MINI VAN ISSUE: SEPTEMBER 2010 Young Mini fan, Alex Elliott, bought his 1982 Mini Van from a friend. It had previously belonged to a window cleaner so was full of rust caused by buckets of water. Alex repaired the shell but there was a problem with the fresh Island Blue paint reacting and causing a marbled effect. It was painted again and the same thing happened! Annoyingly, it turned out to be a problem with the paint he had been supplied, rather than the application. It was sorted out eventually and topped off with an Old English White roof. The paint tones may have been traditional but the Van was fitted with Sports Pack arches and wheels.…

The period when Mini tuning really took off was in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This was just aft er the Mini’s sporting prowess had peaked and it had become a status symbol for the rich and famous. A lot of Minis were beginning to fail the MOT, oft en on the rear subframe, and many more were just generally rusting away. A lot of Minis were scrapped because of this but some were saved in a different way from the full restorations that we all carry out today. There was something else going on at the time based around another iconic car that influenced this, namely the beach buggy craze more usually associated with the VW Beetle. DECEMBER 1992 ISSUE This issue saw one of the most unusual MiniWorld covers ever, featuring female models, wearing the latest fashions while posing with a Mini. Editor Nigel Fryatt could see that MiniWorld was unique in the car mag world as it had (and still has) a strong female readership. If you are restoring a Mini or even carrying out a general refurbishment it is tempting to assume that the engine and gearbox must have a complete rebuild. Often this will be necessary if you do not know the Mini’s history but because an engine has not run for a long time it does not mean that it has to be fully rebuilt. Oft en a top end overhaul i.e. removing and reconditioning the head as well as replacing the clutch (clutches that have been idle for a long time oft en seize), fully overhauling the cooling system and a thorough service will give a new lease of life to an older engine.
