Electroacupuncture, which uses a small electric current passed between thin needles inserted into the body, was tested on subjects experiencing chronic low back pain during a trial performed by researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine. The technique differs from traditional manual acupuncture, which does not use electricity, and some proponents believe it has pain-killing potential. After 12 daily 45-minute electroacupuncture sessions, the Stanford scientists compared patients’ pre- and post-treatment pain levels via questionnaires and found the technique did not seem to lessen participants’ physical discomfort.
