DAZED, confused and tormented by family troubles, sickly Queen Elizabeth was nearly gunned down when she suddenly stumbled into an alarmed palace guard while staggering through the palace grounds in the middle of the night.
The 90-year-old monarch was wandering in Buckingham Palace’s gardens at 3 a.m. when she nearly bumped into the guard, who, in the darkness, thought she might be an intruder up to no good — and pulled his pistol.
“Who’s that?” the guardsman blurted, as he readied to shoot.
Then, recognizing Elizabeth’s face peeking out from under her trademark kerchief, the relieved sentry scolded the queen, saying: “Bloody hell, Your Majesty. I nearly shot you!”
