After Lincoln Cathedral seized the title in 1311, breaking the Great Pyramid of Giza’s 3,800-year run, competition rapidly intensified, with Stralsund, Strasbourg, Beauvais, Hamburg, Rouen, Cologne and Ulm claiming taller churches before the advent of more secular skyscrapers like Philadelphia’s 167m City Hall in 1894. Records toppled even more rapidly in the 20th Century, partly because developers learned to cheat by adding pointy bits on top, the oldest trick in the book.
