Motorists won’t be able to touch their phones while driving for any reason under a law the Government hopes to pass early next year, following a consultation. It would close a loophole that currently allows drivers to take photos, scroll through music playlists or play games on handheld devices. This loophole exists because these acts aren’t legally considered as “interactive communication”, which is the definition that bans making calls or sending texts. Ministers say exemptions will be made to let drivers pay for items using contactless payments if a vehicle is stationary and the goods are delivered immediately, such as at a drive-through takeaway. However, the Government has rejected calls to ban drivers using hands-free phones to phone people on loudspeaker or operate a sat-nav placed in a cradle. Roads…

You’ll soon be able to check online whether escalators and lifts are out of order at train stations after Network Rail released technical data to software developers. Network Rail hopes software companies will use this info to build apps and websites that show in real time whether an escalator or lift is working. It means you’ll be able to plan your journey better before leaving or while on route. The data comes from devices built into escalators and lifts that monitor whether they’re working. Network Rail will initially release this information for around 370 stations nationwide, building up to the full 463 stations over the next 12 to 18 months. Jury’s verdict: it’s a scam I received a text message telling me I’d been summoned for jury service, but could pay £34.99 to postpone it for six months. For a brief second I was caught unawares, thinking it was real. I’m more used to Amazon and HMRC scams, and had never received anything like this before. But then it quickly dawned on me that it was a con, which was confirmed when Trading Standards reported it (www.snipca.com/36295). Currys has stuck to its guns in Ernest Dempsey’s case to get a refund for the £45 it charged him to fix his computer. As we explained in Issue 588, Currys said the problem with his PC was an “operating fault”, and therefore not covered by its warranty. It told Ernest he would have to pay for a repair. We asked Currys what it meant by “operating fault”. It claimed Ernest had caused the problem by trying to transfer a cloned Windows 7 hard drive to the new computer, and therefore it wasn’t an inherent fault covered by the warranty. I was reminded of this while looking for a tool called AC3 Filter. Facebook is donating £1m to the Bletchley Park Trust to help save jobs at the charity, which is in financial trouble as a result of the coronavirus lockdown. In August, the Trust said it was heading for a £2m deficit this year due to the prolonged closure during lockdown, and fewer visitors being allowed since restrictions were partially lifted. It said it would have to cut 35 of the 100 jobs at the site, and close many visitor activities. Facebook’s donation will save some of those jobs, and mean some exhibitions can continue. WATCH OUT FOR… Amazon ‘account issue’ email scams What’s the threat? Scammers are stealing Amazon customers’ details by sending emails that claim they need to “verify” their account to fix a problem. The emails contain Amazon logos, and are written in a similar font and layout to those used in the company’s official messages. They say that Amazon has prevented you from buying or selling on the site because of an “account issue”. It asks you to click an orange ‘Verify Account’ button, which takes you to a site that looks like a genuine Amazon sign-in page. However, it’s fake. Scammers will steal any details you type into it. The scam adds urgency by claiming that if you don’t verify your account within 24 hours it will be closed permanently.…

I recently had an error warning on my Epson XP 600 printer telling me the ink pads had run out and needed replacing. I duly went online to find out how easy the job was. I’m an engineer and found to my surprise that it was well within my capabilities. I looked for the ink pads I needed and came across OctoInkjet (www.octoink.co.uk). I ordered the items and they arrived the next day. Having replaced the ink pads I then had to reset the printer. When people started to panic-buy hand sanitisers earlier this year, the bosses at Digital Growth Experts Ltd (DGEL) thought they were quids in. The London-based firm, which sells health and pet care products on Amazon and other sites, sent 16,190 spam texts to members of the public between February and April. The messages marketed the hand sanitiser – Zoono Body (pictured), claiming it was effective against COVID-19. After an investigation, the Information Commissioner’s Office concluded that DGEL “played upon people’s concerns at a time of great public uncertainty, acting with a blatant disregard for the law, and all in order to feather its own pockets” (www.snipca.com/36304). It’s becoming available in devices like the PocketBook Color (about £240, see www.snipca.com/36313, pictured). How does it work? The transmissive screens in smartphones and tablets emit light. E-ink, like printed paper, is visible because light around you bounces off it. So it uses much less power and may be more comfortable to read, but needs good light where you are. What’s the catch? WINDOWS 10 Remove ‘Quick access’ items in bulk Open File Explorer (press Windows key+E) and you’ll see a ‘Quick access’ section in the left-hand sidebar that lets you open recently accessed folders (if you can’t see this sidebar, click the View tab, then ‘Navigation pane’ and make sure the ‘Navigation pane’ option in the dropdown box is ticked). While this can help you navigate more quickly, it may contain folders you have no intention of accessing anytime soon. What is it? A supercomputer being built in Cambridge to help medical specialists use artificial intelligence (AI) during research. It will be Britain’s most powerful computer. Wonderful. All PCs get slower as they age. Sometimes this is caused by hard drives degrading, but more often it’s because we expect them to run more demanding software, or we let them get cluttered with junk. My seven-year-old HP Envy Rove 20 PC, which came with Windows 8 but now runs Windows 10, is certainly feeling its age. It can sometimes take minutes to boot. I’d finally had enough, and decided to try all the methods that are meant to rejuvenate your system and make it start faster. While research to develop a COVID-19 vaccine is clearly important, I hope that someone somewhere is also trying to fix 2020’s second biggest problem: how to make photo software recognise faces wearing masks. If not, then cataloguing photos taken in this strange year could prove tricky. It occurred to me because I was keen to find a tool that could recognise faces even when they were blessedly free of masks. I’d heard good things about digiKam’s improved face-tagging tool, which came in version 7, released this summer (see Issue 588, page 19). Players of Microsoft’s Flight Simulator 2020 game are replacing some of the poorly rendered images with more accurate pictures from Google Maps. While the game’s graphics have been widely praised, Microsoft did have problems recreating some landmarks. These include Buckingham Palace, which resembles an office block in the game, and Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was shown as an ordinary road bridge. Microsoft made these images using data taken from its own Bing Maps. Gamers are now modifying these images using complicated techniques that extract the data from Google Maps to produce more accurate images. Time spent talking on mobile phones rose sharply during lockdown, as people stayed in touch with friends and loved ones. Figures from Ofcom’s Mobile Matters survey (www.snipca.com/36330) show that the average time spent on a mobile call rose from three minutes 40 seconds before lockdown to five minutes 26 seconds in the early weeks of restrictions being introduced. But Ofcom’s survey, which looked at how around 200,000 people used their Android mobile phones between January and April, also showed that more than one in five (22 per cent) didn’t make a single call in the first 11 weeks of the year. PayPal users have been urged to log into their accounts before 16 December to avoid paying an ‘inactivity fee’ of up to £12. The company is introducing the annual charge for accounts that have been inactive for 12 consecutive months. It defines “inactive” as an account where the user hasn’t sent, received or withdrawn money, or logged into their account. Inactive users will be charged either £12 or their entire PayPal balance, whichever is less. You won’t be charged a fee if you don’t have any money in your account, or your balance is negative. To avoid the charge, log into your account by 15 December, or make a transaction. This means you will have been “active” in the previous 12 months, so won’t be charged. If you no longer…

If you use Chrome to browse the web on your phone or tablet, you’ll now see alerts telling you when your passwords have been stolen. When you sign into a site, Chrome will send an encrypted version of the username and password to Google’s servers, where they’ll be checked against a database of stolen details. This information stays secret throughout – Google can never see your details. If your username or password have been stolen, you’ll see a warning, with a link to change your details. The alerts, which appear on both Apple and Android devices, are part of Chrome 86, which was launched in early October. Modern phones might be ridiculously powerful, but I still find them awkward to use. After a few minutes, my fingers start to ache and despite my Samsung Galaxy S8 having a relatively large 5.8in screen I still find myself squinting at it.
