KATE FIGHTS BACK!

It was the shocking tell-all that shook Buckingham Palace down to its 318-year-old foundations, blowing Princess Diana’s infamous 1995 Panorama confessional out of the water. And less than 24 hours after the world watched Meghan Markle and Prince Harry level explosive accusations of racism and neglect against the House of Windsor during their TV sit-down with Oprah Winfrey, one of their main targets, the Duchess of Cambridge, was seen looking stone-cold furious as she ran errands in London. The palace took the traditional route of issuing a brief statement professing their sadness and concern at Meghan and Harry’s claims – though it included a stinging jibe that “some recollections may vary”. The statement ended with the declaration that the family would investigate the issues privately. But New Idea can exclusively reveal via Kensington Palace…

EXHAUSTED KING SNAPS ‘DON’T COME BACK’

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were allowed to form a key part of the Queen’s funeral – at her wish – but now the buck stops with the King. Having “tolerated” Harry and Meghan’s presence during his mother’s 10-day farewell, the new monarch, 73, has told confidants that “he couldn’t wait to see the back of them”. “This has been the hardest two weeks of Charles’ life. He had to grieve his mother, face the world’s media, shake hands with guests, and all the while he was wondering what his son and daughter-in-law were plotting next,” says a source. “It might sound harsh, but they brought it on themselves, especially with Harry’s memoir looming over them, and Meghan’s threat made just before the Queen died that she could ‘say anything’ about the…

YOU BE THE JURY!

DOWN UNDER DRAMA HE SAID In his royal book, Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, expert Valentine Low (above) claims that while the Duchess of Sussex had a smile plastered on her face during her 2018 Oz tour, she wasn’t happy. Low writes staff heard Meghan saying “I can’t believe I’m not getting paid for this” after greeting the crowds. SHE SAID The Sussexes admitted that their trip to Australia was a turning point, but for very different reasons. “It was also the first time that the family got to see how incredible [Meghan] is at the job,” Harry said. He added their success “brought back memories” about reports the Windsors had been jealous of Diana. THE EX FILES HE SAID Low’s book alleges that Meghan forced Harry’s hand to go public in the early days…

All you need is LOVE

All you need is LOVE

The first time I met Jane Barnes was in the kitchen of her rambling, white weatherboard farmhouse in Bowral, NSW. It was 1993, around the time her husband, Jimmy, released his sixth solo album, Heat. She wore expensive jeans and a little black tee, and the house smelt of wood smoke and freshly baked bread. Jane and her sister Jep were arranging immense platters of food on a kitchen island that seemed to stretch on forever. It needed to because she had a whole tribe of mouths to feed. All four little Barneses – Mahalia, who was 11; Eliza-Jane (aka EJ), nine; Jackie, seven; and Elly-May, four – were skidding across polished floorboards in socked feet. A nanny and Jep’s toddlers, Jesse and Lily, were in hot pursuit. There was a…

HARRY BEGS THE QUEEN ‘PLEASE FORGIVE ME!’

Rushing back to England to attend his grandfather’s funeral, Prince Harry was granted a private audience with his grieving grandmother, the Queen, to apologise for his shocking behaviour these past few months, New Idea can exclusively reveal. In March, Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, attacked the royal family during an explosive TV interview with Oprah Winfrey. At the time, 99-year-old Prince Philip languished in hospital suffering from heart problems and an infection. Sources say the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “barely gave a second thought” to the fact the explosive tell-all aired while Philip was ill. However, the reality of their actions quickly sunk in when Harry returned home last week. He at first found himself largely ostracised from his nearest kin, who all made a show of sharing social media posts…

WILD AT HEART

David Langdon could hear the revs a mile away as his old pick-up truck tore full-throttle around the property. “Holy hell, he’s giving it some boot today,” thought David over the din. But when David strode up to tell his brother-in-law to keep the ruckus down, long blonde hair was whipping out the driver’s side window. Behind the wheel was his daughter Allison, age 12, hooting and hooning. “I’m in awe of her adventurous spirit, but it’s her warmth and compassion that make her unique.”– Tara Brown “She’d pinched the keys and hit the gas. Even today, Allison’s a speed demon. If you’re in a car with her, you hang on!” laughs mum Helen. “Another time she lit a fire nearby and it got into our land. Next thing … BOOM! Up…

Woman claims... ‘I AM MADELEINE MCCANN’

It’s been more than 15 years since 3-year-old Madeleine McCann went missing from her bed while holidaying with her parents and siblings in Portugal’s Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007 – and still, potential leads in the unsolved case continue to flow in. Now, a young woman claiming to be the missing British girl has shared ‘evidence’ to support her theory and is begging the McCann family to agree to a DNA test. Julia Wandelt (also referred to as Wendel or Wendell), from Poland, recently launched the Instagram account @iammadeleinemccan, revealing that she began questioning whether she was Madeleine “a few months ago” after hearing “something” from her grandma. The 21-year-old has since posted a series of photographs that she believes prove her likeness to the youngster. “I have a…

“I CHERISH EVERY MOMENT”

Ellidy Pullin is sun-kissed, sandy-haired, brimming with life. She grew up on the long, yellow arc of Sydney’s Narrabeen Beach, which blessed her with a love of nature, a dusting of freckles, a free spirit and an open-hearted optimism. These are all qualities that the love of her life, the late snowboarding champ Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin treasured. Eighteen months after his death, cradling their little one Minnie in her arms, not one of those qualities has dimmed – in spite of a fierce buffeting by heartache. “Now that life has flashed in front of my eyes, I’ve realised that it is all so fragile,” she says. “So I take every moment as it comes. Nothing really bad had ever happened in my life, and then the worst thing I could imagine…

Q I was unpleasantly surprised this week when I went to see a dentist at Pacific Smiles Group for the first time and saw in the privacy statement small print that I had to opt out to NOT have my personal information shared broadly, including for marketing purposes by third parties and on social media platforms. Their patient survey collected a lot of personal information, much of which seemed unrelated to dental care. After seeing that information in their privacy policy, I understood why they were collecting all that information. What are the rules around businesses offering an ‘opt out’ instead of ‘opt in’ to having my private details shared? A CHOICE consumer data advocate Amy Pereira: Unfortunately, this practice by Pacific Smiles Group is allowed within the current privacy law…

Murder in Larrimah

Murder in Larrimah

It was late on Sunday afternoon in 2018 when we first rolled into the dying town in the middle of the Northern Territory. The sun’s arc had settled into a spectacular orange over the bush but the temperature still hovered around 35 degrees. There was no one around as we pulled up next to a giant Pink Panther lazing in a deckchair beside a five-metre tall concrete statue of a beer bottle. This is Larrimah: a tiny town perched on the edge of the Stuart Highway, about 500km south of Darwin. It’s what they call Never Never country, a harsh, scrubby landscape full of wild donkeys, death adders and the occasional sinkhole. Our accommodation, the Larrimah Hotel, also known as The Pink Panther, looked like it had been plucked from the collective Australian…

Although the newly-minted monarchs took pride of place at the ceremony, those born to rule in the future managed to steal the spotlight on several occasions. The Prince and Princess of Wales were standouts on the day, with their three children – Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5 – melting hearts across the globe. Kate looked positively regal in an ivory Alexander McQueen silk crepe gown, embroidered with the national flora of the United Kingdom. The 41-year-old opted not to wear a tiara for the historic occasion, instead donning a silver bullion and crystal headpiece by British milliner Jess Collett. Charlotte coordinated with her mum in a matching dress and headpiece. And although George played a key role in the Coronation – as a Page of Honour to…

WHAT CANDICE LEFT OUT OF HER TELL-ALL MEMOIR!

When Candice Warner dropped a bombshell earlier this year that she was releasing a tell-all memoir where no topic will be off limits, it didn't take long for the news to reach a handful of past and present cricket WAGs who were rightly worried there may well be an entire chapter dedicated to their exclusive little club! And as news spread across their WhatsApp groups that she was about to spill the beans, no one was more shaken and shocked than former WAG boss Kyly Clarke! ‘You don't mess with her… she's done them a favour’ According to a reliable source, Candice was left in two minds on whether to write about what really went down with Kyly and her then husband, Australian Test captain Michael Clarke, but has “decided to leave out…

TZI PORAH’S FAMILY FEUD TURNS TOXIC!

Tziporah Malkah says she barely recognises the woman her mother has become in the years since they stopped speaking, which saw her go from successful international model and actress to broke and homeless. “We’re estranged, unfortunately,” Tziporah, 47, reveals in an exclusive interview with New Idea. News of the falling out comes as Tziporah’s mum, former NSW Liberal minister Pru Goward’s column in the Australian Financial Review was slammed for villainising the country’s working class. In the piece, Pru described the “poor” as being “not very nice”, lacking discipline, and even compared “poor” people to fictional animals while wondering how they could be “harnessed” for better use. “She refuses to speak with me or see me at all. My stepfather, who is 90, has just been transferred to an old folks’ home [and], has…

CONFRONTING A KILLER

“Mat was sweet … He suffered depression his whole life. Tried to kill himself twice.”– Natasha Darcy The pencil pines that line the winding, dirt driveway mean we can’t see the farmhouse, leaving us blind as to what awaits us at the end. My chest tightens as we edge closer. As a crime reporter, I’ve travelled to the cool and misty town of Walcha, just east of Tamworth in the NSW Northern Tablelands, to confront a so-called ‘black widow’. She is being investigated for the murder of her grazier boyfriend, Mathew Dunbar, not long after he made her the sole beneficiary of his multimillion-dollar sheep farm. While the farmer’s girlfriend claims it was a suicide, most of the town is convinced she played a role in his death and, two months…

INSIDE SHANE & ANNE’S PRIVATE MARRIAGE!

During A Country Practice’s golden years, millions of Aussies would tune in every week to watch the love story between Molly (played by Anne Tenney) and Brendan Jones (played by Shane Withington) unfold. But devoted fans had no idea that, away from Wandin Valley, Anne and Shane had also fallen head over heels in love with each other, and were desperately trying to keep their real-life romance a secret. Even Emily Nicol, who played their on-screen daughter, Chloe, was oblivious about the relationship for years, despite the former child actor exclusively telling New Idea that Shane and Anne became like parents to her. “There was a close bond with both of my on-screen parents,” Emily reveals, 40 years since ACP’s first episode went to air on Channel 7. “Both Shane and Anne are the…

MEGHAN & HARRY EXPLOSIVE INTERVIEW

From the moment news broke of Meghan Markle’s plan to sit down with Oprah Winfrey for a bombshell, tell-all interview about her two-year stint as a working royal, those within royal circles and the public alike have been on tenterhooks to find out what went on behind the scenes. The talk-show queen promised viewers nothing would be off limits, as she chatted with the Duchess of Sussex and her husband, Prince Harry, for their first TV interview since they stepped down as senior members of the firm at the beginning of 2020. Now, New Idea can reveal that, like any TV interview, the Sussexes’ “wide-ranging” and “intimate” tell-all with Oprah – who reportedly described her conversation with the couple as her “best yet” – was heavily edited. When Felicity and Brenden Sewell bought their picturesque cottage in the NSW Southern Highlands, they hadn’t planned on living there for long, but the charms of their now-renovated home won them over. “This was just intended to be a flip,” says Felicity. “We thought we’d just do it up and after a year we’d leave, but it will be three years soon,” she says of the home they share with their two daughters, Coco, 11, and Luella, nine, and Wolfie the German shepherd. When the cottage was put on the market, Felicity – who grew up nearby – recognised it instantly. “I remember when it was built 20 years ago,” she says. “I’ve always liked the house – it’s weatherboard with french doors and a very pretty facade, which presents nicely…

My passion for Percy Joan Collins

I was named Joan Henrietta Collins, but perhaps you may know me better as ‘Alexis Morell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan’ from the TV series Dynasty, or perhaps Edith Keeler, the saintly missionary worker on Star Trek. You can always Google it. I am a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, an aunt and a loyal friend. I have three children, three grandchildren and 13 godchildren, who range in age from nine months to 57 years old, and some of whom may not even remember that I’m their godmother. I am an actress –…

LONELY HARRY BANNED FROM CHARLES’ CORONATION?

THE PRINCE IS FEELING TRAPPED AND UNWANTED The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are learning the hard way that even the best-laid plans can come unstuck. The couple, who are widely understood to have plotted their exodus from the royal family in favour of the glittering lights of Hollywood, have suffered “setback after setback” in recent weeks. According to reports, several of their projects are in danger of becoming unstuck, including a multimillion-dollar Netflix docuseries and Harry’s long-awaited memoir. It’s been alleged that Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, are desperate to reshoot their footage and rewrite chapters of his book after the Queen’s death – but Netflix and Penguin Random House are said to be pushing back. “These big companies they’ve teamed up with are sick of waiting and are ready to cash in on…

What’s really going on with Princess Charlene?

In early March, Princess Charlene of Monaco flew alone to an official engagement in her native South Africa, and has not returned. Ever awash with rumour and intrigue, the star-studded Mediterranean principality has been left to guess when, or if, it will see her again. The sparse bulletins that have trickled out of the ‘Pink Palace’, the royal family’s 800-year-old fortress home, say that the princess developed a sinus infection and had to undergo an operation. But her long absence follows reports of severe turbulence in her 10-year marriage to the realm’s 63-year-old ruler, Prince Albert, and many in Monaco fear something deeper is afoot. “The feeling here is that something else must be happening.” Last month, under growing public and media pressure for reassurance, Albert and the couple’s six-year-old twins, Prince…

The victims had waited more than 10 years for this day, and Victoria’s County Court was full, the front rows occupied by those who’d been subjected to psychological manipulation so cruel and unusual it isn’t covered by a specific law. The press had packed into the back rows to witness the bizarre case. Occasionally someone would swivel to glimpse the perpetrator, slumped in her chair; a dowdy woman in white sneakers and a fuzzy purple jumper. If Lydia Abdelmalek had any comprehension of the gravity of her crimes, she didn’t show it. The 32-year-old wore a blank expression, showing no remorse for the lives she’d destroyed. Since her arrest, Lydia had maintained she was an innocent bystander. And why would she be involved? To those who knew her, Lydia appeared to…

She smothered his soft skin and baby hair with kisses, posed for photos with her husband, Simon, and messaged everyone the happy news. Anyone would think Greta was a first-time mum, but she’d actually been here five times before. “The midwife told me she couldn’t believe how much I loved this baby,” Greta tells New Idea, incredulous. “She said with him being my fifth and the same sex as my others, she was surprised. She didn’t see that a lot.” Over the next six years, Greta and Simon went on to have another three bubs, bringing their brood to an impressive eight – Jeremiah, 16, Felix, 14, Ezra, 12, Hugo, 10, Jasper, 8, Vera, 6, Benji,…

WORTH A FRY

An air fryer works more like a small fan-forced oven and bakes food Air fryers have gained quite the following due to their reputation for being a convenient kitchen helper. They’re great for small households, can cook simple (or extravagant) dinners, and are handy for heating leftovers. Some fervent fans even admit to owning two or three, and others claim they now no longer need to use their oven at all. But with price tags ranging from $599 or more for a top-of-the-line Philips model to less than $60 for a Kmart version, it’s worth considering how much you’re prepared to pay to buy into the craze. When our expert testers put 21 popular air fryers through their paces in our labs, a few cheaper models got their tick of approval, which…

Maggie “Life is all about family, friends and laughter”

Maggie Tabberer has graced the cover of The Australian Women’s Weekly many times but confesses she never thought she’d still be a cover girl at 84. “Darling, I’m thrilled,” she tells me settling into the make-up chair at our photographic studio. It took some coaxing to persuade the former model and Aussie icon out of retirement to step in front of the photographer’s lens once more for a full-blown photo shoot, but she is clearly having a ball. No sooner has she arrived than she’s talking through clothes, fabrics, hats, wraps and jewellery with The Weekly’s Style Director Mattie Cronan and sharing reminiscences from her days back in the 1960s as famous photographer Helmut Newton’s muse. And when she’s ready for her close-up Maggie doesn’t flinch and picks up right where she…

His strong and famous husky voice overflowing with warmth, it seems that even after all these years the legendary rocker still can’t believe he struck it so lucky in love. ‘NO-ONE HAD EVER STOPPED ME IN MY TRACKS LIKE JANE DID’ Jimmy’s 41-year union with Jane is one he celebrates often. In February, he wished his “darling girl” a happy Valentine’s Day in a public declaration of love to his 191,000 Instagram followers, but went one better on Jane’s 64th birthday in January when he serenaded her with The Ronettes’ famous song, ‘Be My Baby’. A BROKEN HEART

Father’s Day 2005 began early for thousands of Australian dads who woke to cold tea and toast and gifts wrapped by small hands, before heading out to celebrate with their own fathers at backyard barbecues and picnic lunches all around the country. But for recently separated Victorian father Robert Farquharson, 35, Father’s Day was a forlorn affair spent browsing the toy aisles of his local Kmart store with his three children – and listening to the car radio while they gobbled KFC before he dropped them back at the former family home where he was no longer welcome. Ironically, it had not been Farquharson’s turn to have his children - Jai, 10, Tyler, seven, and Bailey, two – on September 4, 2005, because Father’s Day had fallen on a weekend that he…

MEGHAN’S REVENGE ON THE PALACE

Just days after it was confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan’s planned Megxit review in March has been cancelled, chaos is said to be brewing behind palace walls. New Idea understands the Queen is preparing to call a private crisis meeting with senior members of the royal family after learning of an alleged plan against the palace. Despite stepping back as senior members of the royal family early last year, sources believe the Duchess of Sussex is still playing the long game. “She is all too aware that her Archie is still seventh in line to the throne until the Cambridge kids have families of their own, and she has – rather morbidly – confided to friends that “anything can happen, so it’s best I’m prepared”, the insider explains. Indeed, even royal author…

‘I WAS BORN A CONJOINED TWIN!’

Gabrielle Garcia shared everything with her twin sister, Kayla. For the first 14 years of their lives, the identical siblings did literally everything together. They once even shared the same body! This was because, in 1998, Gabby and Kayla were born as conjoined twins. Fused at the hip, the sisters shared two legs, a bladder, intestinal tract, liver and kidney. They lived as one body for eight months until the girls were medically separated during a successful, pioneering, 12-hour surgery. “We were conjoined at the pelvic bone and so we kind of took being connected at the hip literally,” Gabby exclusively tells New Idea, with a smile. “Kayla and I weren’t just twins, we had shared each other’s skin, we had shared each other’s organs. And we were literally each other at one point.” Conjoined twins…

HARRY & WILLS’ 2-HOUR CRISIS TALKS!

When it was revealed Prince Harry met with his estranged father and brother for two hours following Prince Philip’s solemn funeral on April 17, royal insiders were all ears for the result. New Idea’s sources say that while talks were “at first cordial”, once they got to the core of each other’s perceived wrongs, things turned tense. “William had some very choice words to say about Harry’s Oprah interview, which he will never not see as a huge betrayal,” explains a royal source. “Harry has such a chip on his shoulder, there was no backing down from either one of them – and certainly no real apology was made. Charles was already in an emotional state after burying his father and couldn’t bring himself to confront Harry about any of the bad blood.…

STALKED BY A STRANGER

It started over a sausage sizzle and casual game of cricket on a sweltering Queensland day. Journalist Nicole Madigan was feeling flat. Her marriage was ending, and it had been a bruising few years. But she had tossed her blonde hair up into a bun to take her son to his game and when it was his turn to bat, she perked up and snapped some photos. A woman she didn’t know breezed past. “Are you taking photos of Adam?” “What?” Nicole asked, bemused. She wasn’t sure she had heard the woman correctly. Adam was one of the fathers who coached the team. “An acquaintance at best,” Nicole says. It was a strange interaction that Nicole might have completely forgotten had she not received a Facebook message that night from someone…

GONE TOO FAR ANOTHER ATTACK ON THE CROWN

Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle denounced palace life, it has become clear to royal watchers that almost everything the couple have said upon their exit were empty promises. On numerous occasions, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have appeared to go back on their word, or even contradicted themselves in some cases. Through it all, the Queen has remained dignified in her stoicism. Yet, her legendary patience is being tested by the latest Sussex bombshell. Indeed, it’s believed the 95-year-old monarch finally snapped last week, after she was informed her grandson is writing a memoir as part of a four-book deal. But the real kicker is a caveat that the second book isn’t to be published until after she dies! Although a Sussex spokesperson has denied the claims about the second book, a…

Five months after the Curry-Kenny family bid a tearful farewell to their beloved daughter and sister, Jaimi Lee, matriarch Lisa has bravely shared that she’s still struggling with the loss of her “beautiful girl”. “I’m still crying at any time ... usually when I’m out in public when people give me beautiful, tight hugs ... the tears just roll out,” she confessed last week. Now, close friends tell New Idea that she would be bereft if not for the support of her second husband, Mark Tabone. “Mark is so warm and supportive – he’s been a power of strength during this terrible time,” confides a close family friend. “She has been on an emotional roller coaster and she’d be completely lost without him.” Lisa, 58, took to social media on Valentine’s Day last week…

“WHILE IT’S A SMALL COTTAGE, EVERY ROOM FEELS SPACIOUS – AND WE’VE CREATED LOTS OF LIGHT-FILLED SPACES TO SIT.”James Watts, homeowner After decades of inner-city living, James Watts was hankering for a tree-change. With fond memories of growing up in the English countryside, the Sydney-based managing director of rug brand Armadillo found himself dreaming of rolling hills and rural vistas. Three years ago, he sold his home in Sydney’s inner east and started searching for a cottage within a 150-kilometre-or-so radius of the city. For 12 months, James and his partner Tony Chapman spent their weekends hunting for the perfect place. They began their search on the NSW South Coast before gravitating inland to the Southern Highlands. On one of their exploration missions, they took a turn-off to Burrawang, an historic village of…

JOCK ZONFRILLO 1976-2023 ‘OUR SHATTERED HEARTS’

After a rough start in life, MasterChef judge and award-winning restaurateur Jock Zonfrillo didn’t want for much. “I’d love to live a super, super simple life,” he revealed to The Daily Telegraph in what would be one of his last interviews. “A small house in the middle of nowhere with kids, pets. Just a really simple, uncomplicated life … Not the flashy extravagant lifestyle you’d expect from a TV person.” There was little about the talented and charismatic Scottish-born chef, who passed away suddenly aged 46 on April 30, that was typical of a TV personality. As his fame grew, he spoke honestly and candidly about being addicted to heroin during his teenage years growing up in his hometown of Glasgow, of feeling like he had cheated death or jail many times…

A MONARCHY IN MOURNING ‘HIS DEATH WAS SO GENTLE’

Prince Philip, wartime naval hero and the Queen’s “beloved” husband for 73 years, died at the age of 99 – just two months shy of his 100th birthday. The longest-serving and oldest royal consort in British and Commonwealth history passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle on April 9. His daughter-in-law, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, revealed: “It was right for him. It was so gentle. It was just like somebody took him by the hand and off he went.” After dedicating his life to being by the Queen’s side, it was fitting then that Her Majesty was at the Duke of Edinburgh’s bedside during his final moments. “The Queen paid tribute to her husband saying he was her ‘strength and stay’ and that’s absolutely right,” explains royal author, Andrew Lownie. “She is a strong woman…

“I know what it means to struggle ”

Julie Goodwin knows what struggle is. She has lived it, breathed it and walked side by side with it more than once during her life. Among the clearest and most poignant of her childhood recollections is an indelible memory of a time when her mother, Marlene, battled to put food on the table each night. “When I was little, Mum was on her own for a time while we were growing up,” recalls Julie, one of Australia’s most recognised and popular cooks. “She endured a lot of struggles. I clearly remember one Christmas when we were living in a flat in Normanhurst on Sydney’s Upper North Shore, and there was a knock at the door. Mum opened it and there was someone from the St Vincent de Paul Society holding a…

Meghan DEMANDS MEETING WITH CHARLES!

Just as things were beginning to thaw between Prince Harry and his family, thanks to him agreeing to attend King Charles’ coronation, the hornet’s nest has been kicked again. In new court papers filed by the Duke of Sussex last week in London, he alleges his father’s staff stopped him from pursuing litigation against The Sun newspaper for phone hacking. It’s claimed this was done in a bid to protect the King and Queen Camilla’s relationship with the British press. Sources say King Charles, 74, is devastated 38-year-old Harry has thrown him under the bus just days before his coronation – but he may have an unlikely ally in the form of Harry’s wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. ‘She worries about her family’s future’ Meghan, 41, will not be attending the May 6 coronation…

Who really killed Mary, Queen of Scots?

It was 2010 when Aussie-born Cambridge University historian John Guy took the phone call that would rock his world. On the line was Sotheby’s in London. The famed auction house had just been given a cache of newly discovered Queen Elizabeth I documents that they thought the Tudor expert might like to peruse before they went under the hammer. “Intrigued, I hurried down to New Bond Street. Breathtakingly, 43 documents in pristine condition, more than half signed by Elizabeth or her leading courtiers, were laid out on the desk,” John tells me with renewed excitement. He had no expectations but what he found was explosive. “The rules were the usual ones in these circumstances: no notes, no photos, as these were properties up for sale. All shed fresh light on the…

I opened my eyes, and there he was standing over me, just inches from my face. He was stroking my head, my hair; God, he was handsome. I wished he were someone who loved me instead of someone whose next words were, “You’re bleeding into your brain.” It was late September 2001. I was in the ER at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. I asked Dr Handsome, “Will I lose my ability to speak?” He said it’s possible. I needed to call my mom and my sister. They needed to hear this from me while I could still tell them myself. I called my sister, Kelly. She was as she always is: the most magnificent person I know. Then I called my mom, a more difficult conversation for me,…

Curious, she made an appointment for a viewing which confirmed her suspicions: the 1970s house was originally built by her father, Meyer, part of a family of builders who migrated to Australia from Holland after World War II. Sibbel Builders was renowned for its high level of workmanship and forward-thinking ideas, such as siting homes with a northerly aspect, installing concrete slabs with hydronic heating and limiting excavation in order to preserve sites as much as possible. Indeed, Heritage Victoria acknowledged the company as being ahead of its time…

WILL SECRET FILES REVEAL THE TRUTH?

Bombshell documents about Ghislaine Maxwell’s private life could reveal damning details about her relationship with the Clintons and Prince Andrew. This month, a federal judge in the United States ruled that the secret files would be unsealed. The documents are part of a batch of material gathered by Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s legal team, who allege that Maxwell recruited her when she was just 16 as a sex slave, taking her to Jeffrey Epstein to be repeatedly raped and abused. Until July 2020, British socialite Maxwell lived a life of privilege, consorting with the upper echelons of society and getting exactly what she wanted, when she wanted it. She became entangled with millionaire financier Epstein in the early ’90s, travelling the world with him and partying with celebrities, politicians like former US President…

Fresh off the boat from China, BYD – short for ‘Build Your Dreams’ – is one of the many upcoming new Chinese car brands either eyeing off, or just-arrived in, Australia. A small SUV built on a dedicated electric vehicle architecture, the Atto 3 is the first BYD model in Australia. It seeks to steal sales from the also Chinese-made MG ZS EV which has been on-sale in Australia since late 2020. Recently facelifted, it remains Australia’s cheapest electric vehicle – but…

Just weeks ago, the Olympian turned doctor and new mum of six gave birth to her premature, button-cute twins after a fall at her Sydney home. “I was walking up the stairs with my son, Charlie, when he fell backwards,” explains Jana, whose tummy was so large at 35 weeks pregnant, she couldn’t see her feet. “I went to catch him and, in the process, fell backwards myself, down 7 or 8 steps.” The normally dexterous former 400m hurdles world champ didn’t land on her stomach, but did bang her head and graze her knee. “I tried all day to keep calm,”…

‘I asked myself, why am I still not happy?’-Julia Morris

Julia Morris doesn’t enter a room. She bursts into one. “Stand clear, mediocre talent walking,” the comedian cracks as she arrives on The Weekly’s set. It’s the beginning of a series of pithy and often self-deprecating jokes that will launch the assembled crew into fits of giggles throughout our shoot, occasionally holding up proceedings as we get sucked into the comedic stories. It’s this effortless flow of banter that has seen her traverse what she calls her “75 years in the business”, pivoting from one opportunity to the next and finding a legion of new, loyal fans along the way. But while it’s easy to write Julia off as a human one-liner generator, scratch gently beneath the surface and there’s a woman of many layers and complexities sitting underneath. “That was…

“The GREATEST BLESSING”

On October 3, 2019, a carefree teenage girl walked out of her family home and along streets lined with old wooden Queenslanders and well-tended subtropical gardens. The day was warm and full of promise. All over suburban Brisbane, jacarandas were flowering. Asha Morris was on her way to visit her boyfriend; then to the white-sand beaches of the Sunshine Coast for a family holiday. These were some of the last steps Asha would take independently for 18 months. In the following days, her world would shift on its axis. Her safe life in a comfortable, leafy suburb would be gone, she’d struggle for her very survival, and emerge a different person to that frivolous, slightly rebellious 15-year-old girl. “I was a ratbag,” Asha remembers now. “I was really naughty.” Her mother, Lucinda (or Luci)…

Gary was due back at work the next day, so they thought, ‘One more dive, why not?’ They packed up their gear and Karen’s underwater camera, and headed for one of Gary’s favourite sites – the shallow water near Devils Rock, not far from the home they shared. “We anchored and it was a beautiful day. WITH HAND ON HEART

In these times, there are many reasons why women are publicly sharing their stories. For some, it’s a cathartic moment and they hope to improve institutions, laws and policies for future generations while others are seeking retribution. Often, it’s emancipation from years of hiding pain and can help others feel that they don’t have to suffer alone, too. Erica Packer’s motivation to speak to Vogue was born of a desire to raise awareness for the needs of rural Australian schools. It wasn’t planned to be a particularly personal story, but as with so much in our lives right now, things changed. I first sent a journalist and photographer to cover Erica’s work with UNICEF in 2011, accompanying her with a TV crew up in Laos, where she was highlighting work building schools…

I Got Organised The CHAOTIC WAY

During the pandemic, as one lockdown led to another, I had far too much time on my hands. The books were first to suffer from over-attention. It started with dusting, but then became rearranging. I pulled all the books off the shelves and stacked them on my bedroom floor. But what system should I use to rearrange them? Alphabetical would be too easy, given the amount of time I was trying to use up. So instead I went for a geographic system, whereby they would be organised first by continent, then according to latitude. The books on the top shelf will come from authors who lived further north which, to me, is only sensible. If a European author is from, say, Crete, you’ll find their work in the sunny climes on lower…

Two weeks is pretty swift for an engagement, even for Rupert Murdoch, but that’s all it took for him to go from engaged to splitsville with his latest heartbreak victim, Ann Lesley Smith. The 66-year-old former dental hygienist was given a $3.5 million 11-carat Asscher-cut diamond solitaire ring from Rupert on St Patrick’s Day in March, but by April 3, it was all over. Sources told the UK press it was Ann Lesley’s reluctance to be in the public eye that prompted the end of their whirlwind romance - she was being targeted online as a conspiracy theorist after calling the COVID emergency a “plandemic” in a radio broadcast. “It was too much for him and too much for her,” says an insider. “She’s a very religious…

MARY’S SHOCK INJURY!

That’s got to hurt! Crown Princess Mary of Denmark shocked onlookers when she was seen sporting a large bruise underneath her right eye on February 27. Known for her love of horseriding, the mother-of-four didn’t seem fazed by the injury as she took a break from royal duties to enjoy a ride out in the sun with her two daughters, Princess Isabella, 13, and Princess Josephine, 10. The two girls appeared to be enjoying themselves as they trotted around the arena on their own horses and took instruction from their trainers. Looking on the fun was Mary’s husband, Prince Frederik, 52, who stood and observed his wife and children alongside the family dog, Grace, and two pals. At press time, it is unknown how the injury occurred. However, the shiner was not visible during…

When news of Prince Harry's plan to attend his father's coronation alone broke last week, the question on everyone's lips was just why his former actress wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who is known to love the spotlight, had decided to snub what will be one of the world's most historic and photographed events. As if on cue, the duchess’ friend, author Omid Scobie, was quick to release a statement that Meghan had chosen to stay home in Montecito to celebrate her son Archie's fourth birthday instead, which also happens to fall on May 6 – the same day his grandfather King Charles III will officially be crowned. “I understand that Archie's fourth birthday played a factor in the couple's decision,” Omid shared, adding that Harry's trip to the UK would a…

Harry’s shock proof! ‘I KNOW WHO MY REAL FATHER IS’

Much to the surprise of the highest-ranking royals and courtiers around him, King Charles has invited the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to his May 6 coronation. It’s a stunning about-turn, given it was just revealed the King had kicked the couple out of their British home, Frogmore Cottage. Many insiders assumed this meant Prince Harry and Meghan were finally banished for good – until it was revealed that an email invitation to the historic event had landed in the couple’s inbox. But others speculate the surprise move came because the King knows something everyone else doesn’t. “Charles is so tired of the drama and Harry has threatened time and again that he has more revelations to come,” says a source. “If an invitation to Westminster Abbey for him and Meghan is enough…

With striking long blonde hair and a killer body draped in designer clothes, she was barely recognisable. The woman who became known as Australia's sweetheart playing naive schoolgirl Kitty in The Sullivans was no more. There's no mistaking her famously girlish voice, however, as Susan opens up to Woman's Day about her life, loves, adopted children, plastic surgery, billion-dollar fortune, a new career as a fashion designer – and her comeback to the small screen. And she blames Kitty Sullivan for the air of mystery that evolved around her family, fortune and love affairs,…

With their non-profit company, Archewell, whose production arm was a partner in the documentary made by streaming network Netflix, Harry and Meghan seem to be setting up a…

SCANDAL IN THE PALACE THE TRUTH ABOUT WILLIAM’S AFFAIR!

Prince William and Duchess Catherine have been described by those closest to them as the “perfect couple” with a “solid relationship”. “There is no jealousy, no friction, they are happy for each other’s successes,” one friend recently told The Sunday Times. And yet while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s romance has long appeared to be the definition of royal bliss, the couple, who celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary on April 29, have still had a few hiccups along the way. “Though they seem imperturbable and calm in the face of adversity, their courtship and marriage has not all been plain sailing,” royal expert Andrew Morton tells New Idea exclusively. One of the biggest scandals their marriage has faced so far was in 2019 when cruel rumours that Wills had cheated on Kate with…

A brilliant mother afflicted with dementia. A devoted daughter, charged with murder

Scientist and grandmother Mary White was 92 years old when she died in her nursing home bed one cold winter’s night in 2018. From the outside, the talented palaeobotanist’s death appeared to be a natural end to a full and productive life. The curls of her youth had long been white, and her final moments were watched over by her loving daughter, Barbara Eckersley. But when her doctor was asked to sign the death certificate, he refused. Something wasn’t right. Mary had lived actively on her Falls Forest eco-property on the mid-north coast of NSW until she was well into her 80s, when a heart attack and then a series of small, destructive strokes blunted her brilliant mind and left her paralysed down one side of her body. She was a…

It was fascinatingly fast.” The former editor of Tatler, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker and founding editor of The Daily Beast spent two years speaking to more than 120 sources for The Palace Papers, and the…

The stories behind the gowns

“I told her she had good legs and she should show them.” – Christina Stambolian The revenge dress In September 1991, designer Christina Stambolian was working at her boutique in Beauchamp Place when Princess Diana strolled in with her brother, Earl Spencer. The siblings had been out for lunch at Diana’s favourite restaurant, San Lorenzo, when they decided to do some shopping. That trip led to the creation of one of the most talked-about dresses in history: the black silk crepe cocktail gown with an asymmetric ruched bodice and side sash, which Diana wore on June 29, 1994, the night that Prince Charles admitted having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles on national television. Combining the dress with her favourite sapphire, pearl and diamond choker, which matched her engagement ring, and scarlet nails, Diana…

Yes, we’ve seen edgier exterior designs and more aggressive performance versions of mainstream Toyota models across the manufacturer’s line-up. And, yes, we’ve seen performance versions of the Corolla in the distant past, but nothing like this weapon the company has just unleashed, with 220kW, all-wheel-drive, manual-shift only, and a 0-to-100km/h time of 5.1 seconds. Toyota says the GR Corolla, which borrows a…

THE AUSSIE AFFAIR HE TRIED TO HIDE

King Charles reportedly once said that Lady Dale “Kanga” Tryon was “the only woman who ever understood me” but even while their love affair was scandalising English high society, the royal was also sleeping with the woman who would become his queen. It was an epic tug of war between Kanga and Camilla Parker Bowles that played out during the 1970s, and while Camilla eventually won the battle royal for King Charles’ heart, and is now his queen, many don’t know that for years he kept both women as mistresses, and reportedly “bounced from the bed of Camilla to that of Lady Tiyon, then back again”. The passions bubbled under the surface even after Charles married Princess Diana in 1981, with the women continuing to dislike each other. So how did a litde-known…

‘HARRY’S BROKEN MY HEART’

‘HARRY’S BROKEN MY HEART’

The Queen’s 69-year reign on the British throne has withstood no shortage of drama and tragedy. But insiders tell New Idea that Harry and Meghan’s shattering tell-all has left Her Majesty’s once rock-solid relationship with her grandson “in tatters”. “The Queen is 94 years old. She shouldn’t have to deal with all this unnecessary drama,” says one royal source. Following the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997, the Queen became a strong female influence in the lives of Harry, then 13, and William, then 15, with Harry and Her Majesty forming a particularly close bond. With William in direct line to the throne, the Queen was able to form a relaxed and cheerful relationship with Harry, with many declaring him her favourite grandchild. Yet that relationship is now hanging by a thread,…

STEPHEN CHOW KNEW SOMETHING WAS OFF WHEN, IN 2010, HE STARTED MAKING MORE SPELLING ERRORS AND TYPOS IN HIS WORK EMAILS. The 51-year-old IT specialist tried to ignore the mistakes, but the situation became more obvious when attempts to punch in his password kept failing. Gradually, he found it harder to focus and perform simple, familiar tasks, such as calculating numbers or signing a document. “Everything was all messed up, and I didn’t know what to do about it,” he says. Not wanting his wife, Eva, and two adult sons to worry, he kept it a secret, hoping he could just muddle through. Instead, over the next few years, more alarming symptoms appeared. As Chow made the daily 90-minute drive to and from work, he had trouble seeing the centre line on the…

UBER DRIVERS TELL ALL!

WHO COULD FORGET UBERGATE?! In March 2018, Karl Stefanovic and his younger brother, Peter, almost discovered that loose lips do indeed sink ships when an Uber driver revealed explicit details of a 45-minute conversation the pair had. Pete, 39, was riding in the Uber – along with his wife, Sylvia Jeffreys, who wasn’t part of the conversation – while Karl was on speaker phone. According to the driver, “they all were aware I was there and could hear everything.” The driver says the main focus of the rant was the duo’s colleagues at Nine, including Karl’s Today co-host Georgie Gardner, Richard Wilkins and several others. “[Karl] said [Georgie] didn’t have enough opinions and he wanted her to step up,” said the driver. “He actually sounded angry and said he was going to start pushing…

MODEL Y NOW BRINGS THE PACE, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE POISE?

MODEL Y NOW BRINGS THE PACE, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE POISE?

TESLA’S MODELY is claimed to be the US electric car brand’s biggest-selling model globally, though the SUV still plays catch-up to its sedan twin, the Model 3, in Australia. Whether it will close the gap rapidly with the arrival of the Y’s fastest variant, the Performance, remains to be seen. With the middle-order Long Range missing, the Model Y line-up still doesn’t fully mirror its sedan sibling. The Tesla Model Y Performance is priced just under $99,000 when including the luxury car tax, while on-road costs take it to about $108,000 drive-away. That’s a substantial, near-$30k jump over the rear-drive, single-motor variant that costs from $69,300. Additions are significant, though, beginning with a larger battery, estimated at 75kWh versus 57.5kWh for the base Y. This delivers a longer range, plus there’s a second…

REMEMBERING BALI 2002 ‘I KNEW HE WAS GONE’

Natalie Juniardi kissed her husband John outside their favourite Kuta restaurant and said, “Bye.” “Be home soon,” John promised, flashing his dazzling smile. It was the evening of October 12, 2002 and would become the last time Natalie ever saw John, 33. Tragically, John, an Indonesian surfboard manufacturer and loving dad to their toddler Kiola, was one of the 202 people killed in the Bali bombings. With the 20th anniversary of that terrible event upon us, Natalie vividly recalls the night she was left a widow. “We’d just had a seafood meal together. Pregnant with our second child, I was tired, so decided to head home, while John set off to the Sari Club,” Natalie, now 48, tells New Idea. Born in Nowra, Southern NSW, Natalie met John at Kuta Beach in 1993 when she was…

Nomadland, Australia

If you know where to look, you will see them. In cars, vans, campervans. Trying not to be noticed in dead end streets, on headlands, around parks. Trying to sleep in tents, in sand dunes, in bush camps. Women who have been tipped into homelessness. Traumatised, exhausted, disoriented. Always on high alert because they are not safe. Looking for a place to sleep, to shower, to charge a phone, to wash clothes, to eat, to get through the long nights. All their energy taken up by basic survival. Constantly moving because they could be moved on and fined. They are no longer the welfare cases, the addicts, the unemployed, the mentally ill. They are often educated, middle-class, working women – mothers, grandmothers, aunts – forced into desperate circumstances by the lack…

The Kate factor

A day is a very long time in the current news cycle surrounding the royal family, and since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved their family to the US, the constantly analysed narrative of brothers at war and of the monarchy exposed feels almost overwhelming. There’s no denying these are landmark times. The Queen is 95 and despite showing an infectious passion for her public role, the passing of Prince Philip, the patriarchal head of the House of Windsor and a calm source of experience, advice and reason, is significant. If we’ve learned one thing from the current slew of revelations from Prince Harry and Meghan, it is that being a royal isn’t as enviable as it may appear. Behind the palaces and privilege is a predestined work life…

THE SECRET THEY HID FOR 25 YEARS

It’s hard to believe that a quarter of a century ago, a handsome but little-known actor by the name of Hugh Jackman managed to win the heart of iconic Aussie star, Deborra-Lee Furness. This week, the couple celebrates their milestone silver wedding anniversary, some 26 years after Hugh plucked up the courage to admit his feelings for the formidable woman he now affectionately calls “Deb” on the set of TV series Correlli. “Deb, she was the big star. I get picked up, and Deb is in the front seat,” Hugh recalls of their first meeting. “She took off her seatbelt and she turned around and put her hand out and took off her sunglasses … I remember thinking, I like this girl.” A few weeks later, Hugh had well and truly developed feelings…

When former Richmond Tigers captain Trent Cotchin and his wife Brooke embarked on an extensive renovation of their five-bedroom Federation home in Melbourne’s inner north, they had no inkling they wouldn’t be around to oversee it. Not long after purchasing the property, Victoria went into lockdown and the couple and their children Harper, eight, Mackenzie, six, and Parker, three, shifted to Queensland to live in the AFL’s Covid-safe bubble. Fortunately, they had a talented designer in the family who was happy to take the reins – Morgan Ferry, the partner of Brooke’s brother, Bryce. Morgan had refurbished one of the couple’s previous homes so he had a good understanding of their style and what they wanted from their new abode. He also had his own country weekender to refer to. “Morgan…

It has been a cataclysmic month for the royal family on so many fronts and as The Weekly goes to press one thing is certain, there’s a lot more hurt and upheaval to come. With Prince Philip in hospital – he underwent heart surgery on March 3 – and COVID-19 preventing the Queen from visiting her 99-year-old husband, early snippets from their grandson and granddaughter-in-law’s interview with US talk show queen Oprah Winfrey started to screen. One can only imagine how the 94-year-old monarch felt sitting alone in her “Windsor bubble” as Oprah declared, “you’ve said some pretty shocking things here” to Harry and Meghan in the bucolic garden of a Californian home (not theirs or Oprah’s we were later told) and offered, “I just want to make it clear to…

A mother’s gift

A mother’s gift

My mum died on June 30. As a bookkeeper, it was important to her that she closed out and balanced at the end of the financial year. She was in hospital seeing the music and floating on a cloud of the finest opiates, a state she’s been wanting to achieve since first hearing the Hot August Night album in 1972. In fact, at the bedside vigil as she lay in bed passed out and snoring, I remarked how this reminded me of how she spent nearly every Saturday afternoon of my childhood thanks to what Mum called a “socially acceptable relationship with prescription medication”. She had a nasty brand of skin cancer, something that didn’t come as a huge surprise. She loved baby oil and sunshine in equal measure and pioneered the…

TOYOTA GR86

Sparkling chassis dynamics; now featuring torque; even better looking than a BRZ PLUS MINUS Pricing a little opportunistic; manual transmission buyers miss out on safety gear; supply issues AUSTRALIA LOVED THE Toyota 86. In nearly a decade on sale here, the lightweight coupe shifted 21,823 units, making Australia its third-biggest market behind Japan and the United States. Suffice to say, we thought the old 86 was something special, to the extent that the Toyota and its Subaru BRZ sibling went on to claim the 2012 Wheels Car of the Year crown. But while the 86 was a good car, it came with some caveats. The engine had a hole in the middle of the torque curve that meant that the Toyota felt about as muscular as an Alloytec running on one bank. The cabin felt ruthlessly built…

RD JULY 1992 ◆ After weeks with my colicky newborn, I was at the end of my tether. My husband suggested I try to ‘bond’ with the new baby. In frustration one morning, after my son had been crying for hours, I phoned my husband at work. Before he could say hello, I let our son scream into the receiver. Then I hung up. An hour passed, and my husband finally called back. I asked what took him so long. He said he was in a meeting all morning and when he returned to his desk he found a note saying: “Your son called.” JEAN SORENSEN ◆ On our 25th wedding anniversary, my husband took me out. Our teenage daughters said they’d have supper waiting for us when we returned. After we got home, we saw the…

THE GREATEST CHALLENGE OF 2021? The closure of the restaurant the day it was about to open, thinking it was going to be a one-week lockdown that actually lasted about 110 days. Financially, it has been a massive hit. UNEXPECTED POSITIVES? We were able to pivot, doing Providoor and burgers – and that kept the team going. I have a fantastic team here of 45 people who’ve been through a lot together in the last four months. We looked after each other – so that’s a positive to come out of it. A LESSON LEARNED FROM THIS YEAR? To be resilient, expect anything and make sure you figure out a way around it. It was a case of pivot or perish. HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE THE FESTIVE SEASON? I’ll be cooking something beautiful at home – the…

Q My partner and I were booking holiday flights at the same time. I was using the Qantas App on my phone paying with a credit card, and she was using the Qantas website to log into her account, booking her flights through the ‘Manage my account’ link and paying with the flight credits ($1200) she had from a cancelled flight. The total for my flights was $860 and hers was $1332. This figure included a $99 fee for flight change from her original cancelled booking, so the actual flight cost was $1233. Seeing this enormous discrepancy I checked on the Qantas website and found the price that I paid was available, i.e. $860. This is clearly unethical, but is it legal?
